  • Continental 1030 KPHX-KCLE (barely!)

Just did this flight today. Used Vatsim for the first time and had some technical snags. I took off with less than optimal fuel load after sitting at the ramp with the engines running for a while. Here is the result:

Cruising in VC (btw, is there a better way to integrate the SB3 windows in FS?)

    Outside view.

On final for KCLE. Check out the fuel gauges...no chance for going around!

    Landing, reversers beginning to deploy.

    Safely at the gate.

    Fuel indications at shutdown.

Well that's very odd. How come you communicate with ATC through private chat?

For some reason, I couldn't see his commands in the main SB window. Couldn't figure out what the problem was so he just had me on private chat since there was nobody around anyways.

Another set of good pictures. Special mention to the air-to-air.

Great shots. I have a hard time flying the PMDG 737. How do you get the autothrottle and and LNAV and VNAV to work?

To get the autothrottle to work, just arm it by flicking the A/T switch on the MCP (you will see a green light above the switch when it is armed). Dial in the speed you want in the IAS/MACH window on the MCP and engage the SPEED button on the MCP when airborne.

To get LNAV and VNAV to work, you will have to know a little about the FMC. LNAV will work if you just enter the departure and destination airport in the FMC, activate the plan and engage LNAV on the MCP with autopilot on. VNAV would work only if you enter the performance data like the aircraft's ZFW, reserve fuel, crz altitude, cost index and so on. It sounds a bit complicated but actually is very easy. With the VNAV engaged on the MCP, the speed and vertical profile is controlled by the autopilot.

This is just the basics, the manual goes a little in depth about the systems. I didn't bother reading it because of previous experience with the 767PIC, which has pretty much the same autoflight and FMC system.

By the way, once you get a hang of the FMC, here is an Alaskan Airlines flight you can try from Sea-Tac to John Wayne/Orange County:

Could it be Real Time Simulation??

Thanks for the info. The problem for me is that I cant flip the A/T switch. When I try, a light blinks saying "A/T First".

Hmmm...that's weird. What version of FS are you using? When do you flip the switch? I usually have it on before leaving the gate. Make sure you have the latest upgrade, v1.3 (I assume you only have the -600/700). If it still doesn't work, go to the PMDG support forum and they should have you sorted out. I had a problem with the A/T switch not engaging sometimes in FS2002 but it works fine in FS2004.

Yup, VATSIM is basically real-time ATC for "pilots" flying online.

That must be it. I run FS2002. I guess I should upgrade soon.
