I've been looking into a new zoom lens for my Canon 300D. I looked at the Canon 100-400mm L but it was far beyond my price range. Then I discovered the Sigma zooms. I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with with the Sigma lens, in particular the 135-400mm. Thanks.
Hey Greg,
I don't know anything about the 135-400.But I have the 170-500,the next time I see you at BWI you can try it out on your 300 if you want. It might not be the mighty "L" glass. But i'm pretty happy with it.
PS: I'll probably be at BWI on Saturday if the sun ever decides to come out again.

Most of the Sigma zooms are soft at full zoom. If you really want quality...100-400 is the only way...

Clovis, not all the time. Sigma's lense are great if your shooting in near perfect weather @ full zoom and your photos will be crystal sharp. I try to avoid going to my local airport when it's cloudy. However, results tend to be more soft in adverse weather conditions but sometimes you never know and you might get lucky. Right clovis? I've seen a few shots of yours at full 500mm in poor weather that looks pretty good. It's hell a lot cheaper and it's the way to go, but if you want the qaulity, save your money for the L glass.
I might try to appear at BWI this weekend if I ever decide to get out of Virginia Beach.
The Canon 75-300 is not at its best at full zoom either, but the Sigma 170-500 really suffers when extended out over 400mm-even in good weather it can be soft. I wouldn't swap mine for anything at the moment although a quick look at Darren Howie's work makes me want to think of getting the 50-500.
But the 170-500 is capable of good results at the outer limits sometimes

Look at the UA 744 shot above. It was very soft, and required a good amount of USM. Amost all the shots were soft or worse, and shooting at 500mm with shutter speeds under 1/500th was difficult. Shot between 200-300 the lens is sharp.
I can post sections of the originals from when I used Matt's lens. Its a fun lens, but it's tricky. Having tried the 100-400L...I can say they don't compare. With the 100-400 90% of the shots are consistently tack sharp.
Exactly-it looks great through the viewfinder but poor on a monitor
Consumer lenses in general suffer from this, shooting in low light conditions and/or at the limits of the focal length can often result in soft images. If you want consistent quality you gotta pay for it, and L glass is not cheap.
G'day Guys
The Sigma 50-500 is a pretty awesome lens for the price i must say.
If you are taking pics ingood light it works a treat even at 500mm.
I picked up a 100-400L particularly for dusk and dawn stuff and it really comes into its own in that time of the day.
You can get great results with the Bigma 500's as has been seen both here and at A.net.
At 400mm the difference is only slight and in the quality so you need to ask yourself how much you may need the IS and is it worth the difference in price.Be aware though you will have a higher wastage rate wit the Bigma but you will get some awesome results at 500mm.
Check out some of Monty Smiths photo's aka Skycruiser as he bought the 50-500 off me a few months ago.
Given the huge price for a canon 500L IS i am considering getting another Sigma for the 500mm range as the results can be outstanding.
Just take a look at some of Andrew Hunts photo's with his 170-500 and the 50-500 is sharper.
Have fun
Darren
I know this isn't the lens you mentioned, but it's another consideration (albeit expensive, but cheaper than Canon). I am planning on purchasing this lens to augment my current line-up of Sigma EX lenses. More on this glass at:
