  • Canon 17-40 f/4 USM or 24-105 f/4 IS USM

Any Canon users? Please suggest a good wide angle lens for 5D Mark III.
    I'm planning for Canon 17-40 f/4 USM or 24-105 f/4 IS USM.

Which one would be better choice?

I don't know much about the 17-40, but I have the 24-105 II, and I'm quite happy with it. It's sharp, and focal range is more versitile than it would be in 17-40. I have it for almost a year, and if I take only aviation shots into consideration, there wasn't a single moment, when I wished it had less then than 24mm on the wide end, but there were several ocasions that I wished it had more than 105mm on the tele end.

A selection of my shots with the 24-105:

I have both and I use the 17-40 so much more than the 24-105. I do however want to switch the 17-40 for a 16-35 f4L though as at 17mm it's a little soft on the edges on my 6d.

I use the 24-70, so neither. It's an incredibly sharp lens.

The EF 24-70 f/4 L IS is a better lens overall than either the 17-40 or 24-105. It is sharper and has less distortion. The EF 16-35 f/4 L IS is another story but it's a lens I'd recommend using alongside a 24-70 or 24-105 rather than instead of.

The 17-40 is knocking on a bit now and exhibits very poor peripheral sharpness. The first iteration of the 24-105 is a good general-purpose lens but it suffers from excessive distortion and edge sharpness can be weak unless stopped down.
