  • What lens for Canon 80D?

Hi! In my previous topic I talked about the 90D but I decided to with the 80D instead.
And I’m looking for a new lens as well. I want to go with Canon 70-300 (black) but I want to hear other options and opinions.
I’m looking for a sharp lens.
    thanks

80D is a great choice if you're jumping from the 1100 and have a budget. I use it with the standard 18-135mm ISM and the 100-400mm Mk1 which bring out superb photos if you want to see my account: https://www.jetphotos.com/photographer/208116

Hello! Thanks for the advice and the pictures. The pictures look really crisp and i know that the 100-400 lens is very good. But to much for my budget. Can you recommend something else?

It is a little pricy but defintely worth it, when you see the prices for the 70-300 it is only slightly less than a 100-400, and second hand market is full of them as people move to the Mk2 version, so if you shop around you'll probably find one in your price range!

I think the OP is referring to the 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS USM, which is not the L version. It's a good lens but only up to about 200mm, and it needs to be stopped down.

I have replied to your other (90D) thread — I know people who are very happy with their 80 and 90Ds but there seems to have been some quality control issue at Canon that's lead to sub par copies being released onto the market (either that or issues when certain lenses are attached).

The EF 70-200 f/4 L (non-IS) I think would be a better choice than the 70-300 non-L — it's superb value and you'll likely get better results cropping a 200mm image from the L lens than you will at 300mm with the 70-300. There's also the 70-300L, which can be found for under EUR1,000 in places.

In all honesty I would go for one of the entry-level DSLRs rather than an 80 or 90D, and spend the saving on good glass. The quality of your lens(es) is much more important than the quality of your camera.

actually I went for the Canon 70-300 L instead, I’ve heard many good things about it. What do you think of the lense?

                Hello.

I also use the 80D in combination with the 70-300L and i like it.
Quality of the Lens is great, no chromatic abberations and a superb stabilizer (as I feel) to get sharp shots also with slow shutter. I can recommend this lens - but the decision is of course yours.

If you want you can check my Images or just filter every Image in our DB by Lens or Camera.

But remember whenever and wherever you look at Images also the Photographer is taking the Picture. You can produce awesome Shots with cheaper lenses but also rubbish with expensive ones

                Regards from Germany,

It's a great lens but if you're concerned about budget I'd pair it with a more entry-level DSLR or maybe a used 6D. As I said, I know people who are really happy with their 80Ds but for me its reputation has been tarnished.
