  • What exactly is classified as 'Backlit'?

Apart from the obvious case, when the whole plane is in shadows, when is an aircraft in a photo classified as 'backlit'? Specifically, how high up the fuselage does the shadow need to be for a photo to get rejected? Is it acceptable to have the bottom half of the fuselage in shadows? Usually, those photos are taken with the sun just behind or just above you, not necessarily in front of you, but I want to crystal clear before wasting a queue slot.

I would generally not bother if less than, I dunno, a quarter of the tail is getting sunlight.

If the tail is in its own shadow, then it’s backlit

Anything plane hat has more than half a shadow on the tail. You can try and avoid this by using this website: https://www.suncalc.org/ . It tells the location of the sun and best time to plane spot with the least backlit possibility.

Rule of thumb is if the tail is in shadow the aircraft is backlit.
