The issue here is determining the best combo Mike can get for his money, taking into consideration he wants something that will be a semi-long term purchase...(DSLRs are never really long term purchases!)

Exactly. That is why I would rather spent more money on the lense then on the body. So better an expensive lense and a cheap body then vice versa.

I honestly don't think lenses are long term either. Just like your still using the D30 now. The 10D is a solid camera and can be used for awhile. No the case with the 300D. Which really are the only two I'm considering. I can't go L right away. But I migh get there in a years time. Maybe catcha good deal on one.

Don´t know about Canon, but I´m using my Nikkors for a long period right now. I bought the AF 80-200 D when the N90/F90 series was quite new. And I´m using the same lense today on my D100. I´m not sure, but that lense is in the 7-8 years in use now. And I´m sure it has many years of life left.

In the meantime I used the F90X, the F-5 and now the D100.
