Don´t know about Canon, but I´m using my Nikkors for a long period right now. I bought the AF 80-200 D when the N90/F90 series was quite new. And I´m using the same lense today on my D100. I´m not sure, but that lense is in the 7-8 years in use now. And I´m sure it has many years of life left.
In the meantime I used the F90X, the F-5 and now the D100.

I honestly don't think lenses are long term either. Just like your still using the D30 now. The 10D is a solid camera and can be used for awhile. No the case with the 300D. Which really are the only two I'm considering. I can't go L right away. But I migh get there in a years time. Maybe catcha good deal on one.

Well thanks to everyone.
Clovis pretty much gave me the options this morning and here's the final decision
Canon 10D
Canon 75-300 III USM
Scandisk Ultra 512
Total $1450
this will leave me some room at christmas time to maybe upgrade to some L glass.
As of now I'll use my HP for close stuff as it works pretty well in that area.
thanks again.
here are the links to the merchants in case anyone wants similar

Why 300D...why not D60/D30 in this case?

People are really forgeting the key here...photographer counts...I've seen people produce sh*tty images with a 10D+100-400L and great photos from D30+75-300 USM...

At least with a 10D you'll have the megapixels to back up a new lens purchase later on. I would have certainly gone that way had I not been on such a limited budget for my D30.
