    Don´t know about Canon, but I´m using my Nikkors for a long period right now. I bought the AF 80-200 D when the N90/F90 series was quite new. And I´m using the same lense today on my D100. I´m not sure, but that lense is in the 7-8 years in use now. And I´m sure it has many years of life left.

    In the meantime I used the F90X, the F-5 and now the D100.

    I honestly don't think lenses are long term either. Just like your still using the D30 now. The 10D is a solid camera and can be used for awhile. No the case with the 300D. Which really are the only two I'm considering. I can't go L right away. But I migh get there in a years time. Maybe catcha good deal on one.

    Exactly. That is why I would rather spent more money on the lense then on the body. So better an expensive lense and a cheap body then vice versa.

    Well thanks to everyone.
    Clovis pretty much gave me the options this morning and here's the final decision

    Canon 10D
    Canon 75-300 III USM
    Scandisk Ultra 512

    Total $1450

    this will leave me some room at christmas time to maybe upgrade to some L glass.
    As of now I'll use my HP for close stuff as it works pretty well in that area.
    thanks again.

    That's because they think the 10D is a professional camera and you can't use an "el cheapo" lens like the 75-300 But seriously,the 10D is a better option in the long run than the 300D if you can afford it.

    Well, that's strange...these photos don't look too disgraceful to me:

    [photoid=317461]
    300D + 75-300

    [photoid=315158]
    D30 + 75-300

    It is not a bad lense, but with that lense you do not need a 10D. A 300D would be a better match.
    I hate to be rude but you are making no sense what so ever. A 10D is a far better investment than a 300D down the road...no matter what the glass you put on it.

    Why 300D...why not D60/D30 in this case?

    The issue here is determining the best combo Mike can get for his money, taking into consideration he wants something that will be a semi-long term purchase...(DSLRs are never really long term purchases!)

    That's exactly my point for suggesting the 10D-there is enough features on it to grow into. Besides, the 10D's price has dropped a bit lately. I wish it was this low when I was upgrading! However, I am still quite satisfied with a D30

    People are really forgeting the key here...photographer counts...I've seen people produce sh*tty images with a 10D+100-400L and great photos from D30+75-300 USM...
    Yea, getting the 100-400L might not be a good idea if you can't even shoot a decent photo with a 75-300 :P
