  • YVR Plane Spotting Location Recommendations

I will be making a couple of trips to Vancouver, BC and YVR in the near future and was wondering where the best spots are near YVR for plane spotting and getting good photos.

Templeton street: (runway 26R) this is where landings happen if west-ops are inuse.
Take the 98B Line bus from downtown to airport station (the station isn't exactly at the airport) to get to Templeton street you can walk along miller road in the direction of the airport or get on the 424 bus at airport station and then tell pull the little wire for the first stop after leaving the station and tell the guy that you want to get off.... templeton street is written in big letters on a blue sign so you can't miss it. Along templeton street there is a wide dirt/rock path where ppl park so you can just watch from there. If east-ops are you are screwed unless you have a car.... if you have a car then just keep going along templeton and eventually it turns into another road and goes parallel to the runway and will take you to where you can see 8L arrivals (i never actually tried this myself as i didn't have a car so i just went to templeton street when west-ops were inuse) For 8L departures.... you have to walk along templeton street south till it ends... then there will be a field with a fence and a pasage through the fence go trhough the pasage and you end up on a street.... keep walking on this street till you get to a park and then you can see the planes going up from 8R.... you have to walk to the other side of the park though to get the planes with the sun at your back... or mabey even cross Russ Baker Way. I'm not sure... cuz as soon as i got the park the one time i walked that way they switched back to west-ops and i had to walk all the way back to templeton street for 26R landings... and i just missed the Zoom 763 . This is how YVR operates for the most part.... southside= departures northside=arrivals. Although in the rare case some departures might go off the north runway (26R) (this happened once in the late afternoon when i was there), most go off the south runway though (26L).

When you get there just explore... ppl there are more sane and not as paranoid so don't be afraid to walk around with your camera... YVR is the best!

Thanks for the spotting location suggestions!! This information will be helpful. I will have a car to get around in, so I should be able to get to Templeton Street.

As for walking around with the camera, it is good to hear YVR is good!! I haven't had any problems with taking pictures here at PDX, but I have seen the horror stories in this forum concerning some airports.

Ah... then if you have a car no problems at all! You could go pretty much anywhere. Only thing is.... if you stay in the downtown area there is virtually no free parking

I didn't go to the Purolator lot... but a person that i e-mailed for info about YVR before i went there said that sometimes he has been told to leave the Purolator lot, so he just left and came back....

I bet if you were in the US that rent-a-cop proally woulda been like 3 or 4 real cops....

Yeah, he said it was "sensitive area"

If only my friend had brought his Transport Canada PPL documents, but still, he could have just said it was private property.

One can still drive around the south-terminals unchallenged!
