  • Canon 70-200 f4.0 + Extender 1,4* !?

    I am sure it has been asked before but how is this combination?

    *sharp?
    *autofocus (fast)?
    *worth the money?

    ....and before you ask, I am only interested in the 4.0 as my wallet is too slim for the 2.8.

    thanks for the help!
    greetings,
    Philip

    I use this combo and I think it's great.

    1) Very sharp, though the converter makes it slightly softer
    2) Focuses fast
    3) The 100-400 isn't that much more than this combo. They're probably pretty close optically, but the IS of 100-400 and the extra range might be worthwhile.

    At f/5.6, it's a little slow, but manageable.

      Can't really comment on that lens, but...

      ...what's wrong with your Sigma 50-500?
      If you can take pics like:
      [photoid=327736]
      I don't see a need for change.

        I can't judge your proposed combination, but have heard only good about it, but ... why that combo and not the 100-400 IS? If the choice would be 70-200/2.8 + 1.4x EXT, that would be a different story.

          Thanks guys!

          Will, glad you like the BA shot!!

          Nothing is wrong with my Sigma, in fact I really like it. Only thing is that it tends to be soft (and often too soft to save a pic) at 400+ mm. So I think about switching to original Canon L glass.

          Of course the 100-400 IS is an option too but because of some reason I thought the mentioned combination was sharper and better!?

          [i]So...which one would you pick - the 100-400 IS USM or 70-200mm 4.0 + Converter?
          greetings,
          Philip

            I would pick the 100-400 IS. I heard it is sharp at 400mm. Plus the IS allows you to hand hold at very low shutter speeds. Dunno about the 70-200 4.0+tele combo but I guess if you are pressed for cash, it is not a bad choice.

            PS: That BA shot is sweet

              I would definitely stick to the 100-400, even more, since I had the chance to try it a few times. It is a crisp sharp lens!!

                Go with the 100-400. Seeing as how you're used to having 500mm, 280 might not be quite enough.

                Quality should be good either way, and you'll have IS on the 100-400.

                  Philip,

                  I also agree that GB Airways A321 is a magnificent shot

                  How sharp is the 100-400L............

                  Well how about this:

                  [photoid=318772]

                  1/50th at 275mm handheld

                  Or

                  [photoid=308578]

                  1/125th at 400mm handheld in fading light

                  Or

                  [photoid=269404]

                  1/640th at 400mm in good light

                  Finally

                  [photoid=264906]

                  1/800th at 400mm again

                  If you have any worries over how sharp this lens is at 400mm, I'd say you can put them to rest.
                  Without doubt the most superior lens I have ever used.............so far

                  Apologies for the Clovis like plugging :P

                    Garry has just about covered all the bases here with the 100-400L.
                    It also works well with TC's although your hit rate will drop off a bit but the IS still works wonders.
                    Another example of a 400m shot with the 100-400L.

                        Er, no actually, if you read the thread you will observe this comment from Philipe:

                          Hi guys!

                          Thanks a lot for the compliments, tips and example pictures, I'll go for the 100-400 then in the near futute.
                          I would like to have it untill September 4/5 because of an airshow taking place in Switzerland (will you be there Gerardo?)

                          thanks again, keep on shooting
                          greetings,

                            Most probably I won't be there. This military jets are somehow .... uhmm ..... toys, compared to real heavies

                            No, seriously: I can't go away this weekend. I have to take care of my daughter. Perhaps - if the weather is ok - I'll take her to ZRH.
