  • Question about selling a photo

    Hey,

I got this email from a guy who wants one of my pics and I don't really know how to tell if my picture is good enough to sell to him.

which can be enlarge into at least 5 feet by 5 feet, 300 dpi image. Of course I will pay for the image. Please email me and let me know if you have such image. Thank you.
    Regards
How do I tell what DPI my image is and if I can enlarge it to 5 feet by 5 feet?

    Thanks.

Unless you're using an absolutely top of the line digital camera, or film, your photos won't be resizable to 5x5 feet.

That's what I figured. I doubted my little 3.1MP camera would be good enough Would a D30 be able to cut it? I know Scott has the exact shot that this guy wants (I was with him when we both took it) maybe he'd be able to sell it to him.

5 feet by 5 feet at 300 dpi?????

A little math: 5 feet are something around 60 inch. With 300 dots per inch (dpi) it makes 18000x18000 pixel. I don't know ANY camera or scanner at all below US$ 20'000, which can produce such results.

I guess, that guy doesn't even need those 300dpi. But even at 80 dpi, a D30 would have a hard time producing a good pic at 4800x4800 px, which is even more, than a D60 can produce. You would have to enlarge it with PS or a dedicated picture enlargement software à la Genuine Fractals. But I can't say, if it would get reasonable results. I doubt it.

        Sorry

Sure, with a professional gear, anything is possible. But we are talking about "muchos $$$"

Well....I think you're out of luck...

But that being said, with my D100 I've had two photos blown up to 8ftx6ft and it looked pretty damn good.

At which resolution were they made?

Did it look good from 100 feet away or 10 feet? hehehe

It looked great from about 2 feet away. It was my cover photo used as background for the booth at HeliExpo in Vegas.

I just sent the company my full resolution copy, and the magic was made from there.

300dpi is a printing term...and it is frequently mistaken as a photographical term.

A print in that size does not need to be printed in more than 100dpi, even 80 would suffice. Asking for it in 300dpi shows he doesn't know what he's doing.

From a nice uncropped 6mp shot you could easily get nice results in that size, if you know how to interpolate.
