Anyways, congrats on 101 pics and welcome to the forums. As for the getting a Canon, I would get it IMO because it is top of the line and what pretty much everyone suggests for a beginning/middle class photographer.
EDIT: If I had read your post more carefully I wouldn't be doing this. For the lense post a thread in the Aviation Photography Forum and ask for people's opinions. You will get much more attention there and most likely a better answer.
