That would be like a monkey with a computer Back on topic, you can pick up the standard Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III lens for around £120 brand new these days.

The lens is pretty good. I just got it about a week ago so I've just started using it. It will be put to the ultimate test on my Rebel XT at the airshow this weekend. I've seen a little chromatic abberation on it so far but nothing too big at all. It's a very good lens for the price!

Been using the 75-300mm on my 350D since I got it and haven't had any problems. The only issue is sometimes the shots @ 300mm tend to be a bit soft but I don't know if that is because my lens is the IS type or simply how all of the Canon 75-300mm act. So far none have been soft enough to ruined the picture. A bit of sharpening and/or USM and the problem was solved.

I speak from experience - the 75-300 is a superb lens to start off with.

It's a greater starter lens imo. But after a while you'll probably want to move up to a 70-200L or something.
