I don't know why the county mounties (O.P.P) would bother you as the airport is not in their jurisdiction. The Peel Police have authority since the real Mounties pulled out.

I've been hassled once. I was able to get out for lunch and I was sitting watching the planes and a cop (Peel) came up and started yacking at me. I have my ID around my neck and I just swung it over to him and said " hey my security clearance is higher than yours". He just walked away.

Anyway I don't understand their problems. All they have to do is drive up, have a look, check to see you are not carrying a gun (thank God the airport's not up here in redneck country) and go one their way.

I think its a rush for them.

At YVR last summer the RCMP guy just drove by this large area where people park and watch (templeton street) and nobody cared. As far as I'm concerned, spotting in Canada was much better than the US. At least YVR was.

At YVR they even have a special "spotting area" underneath the approach for 26L. I don't go there because it isnt that great of a location for photos....but it has picnic tables etc...including miniature runways mimicing the YVR runways.

I've only once had trouble at YVR. To the west of the UPS building there is a gated dirt road going from the road to iona beach to the perimeter fence...and a corresponding locked gate in the fence. Some time last year they begun doing some construction work in the area and had construction equipment near there. When I tried to go there one weekend (when they weren't working), I was stopped be a rent-a-cop and told I wasnt allowed to be there. Not to surprising really. I tried to email YVR to ask them if I am allowed to go up to the perimeter fence, but they never responded. It's not really a big deal as there are a number of pretty good places around YVR to spot where noone will bother you.

          Well... maybe

I was spotting on Renforth Drive (for ppl from Toronto). It is quite close to the runway. Ther was also Toronto Police not the Peel Police... I know from my friends who are spotters about the "nice" policemens but the one that stopped me didn't sound friendly at all. Anyways I am glad that they still allow spotters to take pictures at YYZ. I hope the next time I will not have any problems... however I don't take pix there any more
