  • Sigma lenses

    Hello all,
I am planning on getting the 20D in the next couple weeks. I plan on buying it from buydig.com and I can get a nice Sigma lens for about 200 dollars with the camera. Are they good lenses? Also, what is a good size lens to get?

    Thanks in advance.

BTW: I dont see the sticky for which camera/lens to buy. Mods, feel free to move it there, if its still there somewhere.

Why not but a slightly cheaper camera with a more expensive lens?

I use the 135-400 and I'm quite pleased.

My 100-300mm EX leaves nothing to be desired (except perhabs a few more milimeters reach for which I might get the 1.4xTC).

So in a way, yes, Sigma does make good lenses.

However, for 200 dollars it won't be anything exceptional. With Sigma, as with every other brand, you get what you pay for, and really good lenses start around 1000$ in my opinion.

Wel lSigma - like every company in the business, does make some really good lenses but also some really bad ones. So it will depend on the actaual type of lense.

OK, it turns out it was actually Tamron. I found a Canon 55-200 MM lens for $200. How for will the 200MM lens reach? Will it work on distances about 4000 feet away?

I´m always a bit sceptical of those superzoom lenses. They tend to be soft at 200mm.

I wouldn't go for the 200$ Sigma and probably neither for the 55-200mm Canon, mainly because I never heard of it and because In my opinion 200mm on the upper end is a bit low in my opinion, but I don't know your spotting locations.

Do yourself a favour and spend some few bucks more on lenses. Your 20D deserves it. For example, I had the Canon 75-300 mm and would always recomend it as a starter lens.

Is there a 400mm superzoom ? I only new of some 28-300mm or something.

Anyway 200mm can be a bit short for your airport. But that is something only you can know. (At my favorite airport 200mm is just fine)

Having worked my way op the prize line for lenses I definitely recommend you to spend most of the money on the optics and not on the camera!

Startet out with a Soligor 4.6-6.7/100-400 lens and it worked for the beginning. Had some great reach and was quite light but optics haven't been too good as you might guess. Have some of my shots with this lens (on film) uploaded here and elsewhere, though .

Then bought myself a Sigma 2.8/70-210 APO for about 400 Euros and later added a 2x converter to it. Worked great until about a month ago when UPS killed it while shipping to Minolta service center.

Then I got myself my beautiful Tokina AT-X 2.8/300mm which went for about twice the prize of the Sigma and don't regret it a minute. It's a monster, though .

But having three Sigma lenses now I would recommend Sigma to anyone. They make some real bargain ones and if you don't expect highest quality on the lower end of the line you should be happy.

This is another good site to order from. I have a 100-300 Sigma for my D70 and its a great starter lens. But now I want something bigger

                            A 20D and a $200 telezoom? There are some things I just can't understand...
