  • Advice required re rejections

    Hi there

This is the first time I have posted here, so please be gentle

I am using a Nikon 5700, (whilst waiting to upgrade), so the perfect shot is difficult, well for me anyway. I have recently received a couple of rejections and would like some advice to avoid in future.

    For example, I submitted

JetPhotos.com is the biggest database of aviation photographs with over 5 million screened photos online!

recently and while I can see that it is not perfectly sharp, when I compare with some others

[FUJIFILM FINEPIX S3000]. B-HXO. Airbus A340-313X. JetPhotos.com is the biggest database of aviation photographs with over 5 million screened photos online!

JetPhotos.com is the biggest database of aviation photographs with over 5 million screened photos online!

mine does not seem to be any more blurry, (which is advice for rejection). I do not wish to rubbish anyone else's photos, but I would like to find out more about rejections - do the scanners have more rigorous criteria when there are many shots of teh same aircraft, for example?

    Thanks for any advice.

    Cheers
    Mark

Your photo is very borderline. Just go back to the original, re-edit it, add a little more USM, and you should be good to go.

Also note that one of the examples you posted was from over a year ago, in which time standards have gone up a bit.

"Blurry" and "Under Sharp" can be very fine lines. I've had a few rejected for not being sharp enough and spend some time trying to find exactly what or where the problem is. Drives me nuts sometimes I've been using USM until it looks like I've gone a little too far, then step backwards one or two steps. That usually seems to work for me.

Thanks for that - much appreciated.

Are there any USM settings that you regulalry used, that you are happy to share?

            Cheers

Alot of people seem to have specific settings for thier camera model.

              I myself use:
              Amount: 65%
              Radius: 0.4 pixels
              Threshold: 0 levels

I've been told to use around 400% and some other settings which I can't remember, but the ones I use now seem to work with one or two passes plus a "sharpen".

                This is what I use:

                150% 0.2

2-4 times, depending on the photo.

I'm not quite sure whether this is a literal question or not? hmm

                    If it is:

Mark, your picture is slightly blurry, even on my laptop screen. The 2nd Cathay aircraft you listed, which was taken with the 350D, isn't blurry. However, the first one was, BUT, this was back in 2004 when the requirements for photos in the database weren't as strict.
