Based on the info in a few e-mails from various photographers (thanks everyone!) I have ordered the Sigma 80-400 OS and hope to receive it tomorrow! Hopefully we'll have the 30D by then so I can take it for a test snap somewhere!

I purchased my 100-400L IS this time last year, I got the Bigma first got an awful copy and go a replacement and that didnt focus :O. Jessops offered me the 100-400 at a very reasonable price and I havent looked back since. Fantastic sharpness, colours and the zoom range I find possible the only drawback. If Canon still did the 35-350 L I would have considered that but seeing as they don't, I will hope for many more years and glorious shots from my favourite toy.

Thanks for the advice MAX, but my original idea was to have the Bigma (covers all focal lengths I need) and seeing as that didnt pay off for me I took the reasonable offer Jessops gave me without really letting them think about how much money they were going to loose. I would not trade in my 100-400L now for anything as I have a tack sharp copy and I've got used to the Push / Pull and the "perfect" settings for it.
I am however looking at getting the Canon 24-105L IS F/4 and the best price I have seen it is £714.93. Anyone got an comments on that lens?
Thanks...

Thats pretty cool. I met a photographer today on a conference I was attending, well sort of, I was a waiter there. And there was alot of photographers that were using Canons. I see big Zoom lens and smaller universal lenses, including that one you mentioned. It was the 24-105 L glass.. I told him some stuff about me, that I also was a shooter. I asked him politely If I could try some shots with it, He was also using 5D. So what a fantastic opportunity to try that one today. The photos came out pretty neat, but I havent seen the photos on a pc screen, but it looked rather nice on the LCD.

I've had it about two months and paid around $1100 USD for it.

G'day,
Managed to take the 30D and Sigma 80-400 OS for a test run at the airport on Sunday and I have to say I'm pretty impressed with the results. Three shots are online here already, my pic of the bunch is the shot below. I'd always wanted to see individual fan blades in my shots..... that dream has now become a reality.
On Twy Bravo taxiing for a Rwy 19 departure as NZ136 home to Auckland.. ZK-OKD. Boeing 777-219(ER). JetPhotos.com is the biggest database of aviation photographs with over 5 million screened photos online!
(I've no idea how to link jetphotos.net images the other way..... if someone can change it so the image actually displays I'd be most appreciative!)
Now some comments.
Sigma 80-400 OS - Beautifully finished lens that feels fantastic and balances nicely with the Canon 30D despite it's weight. It is heavy but having operated a Sigma 170-500 before I'm familiar with big heavy lenses! The Optical Stabilization system works a treat and certainly helps keep the images sharp. Sharpness varied from shot to shot but I was trying some pretty silly things with it just to see what it could and couldn't do..... I'd like some more experience before I offer my final thoughts! Autofocus, yep it's slowish and noisy (the 100-400L is silent!) but it does the job to my satisfaction. Having used the Canon 75-300IS USM for the last few months I can say with confidence that the Sigma 80-400 OS beats it hands down.... in every aspect! What impressed me most? Colour accuracy and sharpness. What bothered me most? Not a great deal, the ring type zoom is a bit stiff but I just whacked the hood on and used it as a push pull....... which sort of worked pretty well!
Canon 30D - stepping up from the D60 I was a little nervous about how well I'd adapt to such an able camera. I was pleasantly surprised to find it essentially the same in it's usability. Very user friendly indeed, and that rear 2.5in screen...... whoa! It's fast at everything it does, from power up to focusing..... extremely fast! Fantastic and highly accurate colours, contrast and saturation is excellent and the detail this camera picks up is amazing!!! I'm aware some have had exposure issues, I shot all day with no exposure compensation and was gob smacked with how good the shots turned out! Only criticism I can find is that the battery compartment door is flimsy and doesn't close firm. And the rubber thingy that covers the USB/Video connection points is even more cheap and tacky than on the D60 (but atleast it's easy to close!!!). Fantastic camera, fantastic price, Canon..... fantastic!
If anyone has any questions I'd be more than happy to try and answer them. I struggled for good info on the 80-400 OS and was extremely grateful to those from Jetphotos that kindly offered sample images and excellent info on the Sigma lens. I'd like to hope that anyone pondering the 100-400L vs 80-400 OS finds thigns a little easier now that they've read this post.
Cheers from Brisbane,
Craig

Hey Craig, Thanks for your mini report. It has been most useful. I to have just sold my D60 for the 30D. In fact it arrives today and im looking foreword to testing the bad boy out! Although i loved the D60 dearly the ISO limitations (in terms of grain produced) was hindering my progress on many shots i wanted. Im just hoping that the 30D will be as sturdy and well built as the D60 was. By the sounds of it the USB/Video seal no longer takes a degree in physics to close
What kind of battery usage life do you get out of those BP-511's compared with the D60? I know in cold weather the amount of time you got before the battery died was laughable. Wondering if the 30D is similar?
I'll be using the 100-400L with the 30D so im very interested in seeing what kind of results it gets in terms of colour depth etc. I know the D60 could produce some awesome contrasting colours/light with the right set up...

Interesting to hear about the exposure compensation. Ive heard many conflicting stories regarding this. Some say you'll need to under expose by 1/3 on most white aircraft in good conditions, but you say you didn’t and although there seemed to be a slightly overcast sky the plane was in good light. (Nice job on the fan blades by the way)
Did you happen to try out the spot metering system? Id be interested to know more about this as it wasn’t available on the previous model (20D). Ill miss my trusty D60 as it has served me well. Hopefully the 30D will give me many years of happy shooting to come
