  • An Idea...

So I was thinking of upgrading my telephoto lens. I have a 70-300 Nikkor right now...

My only problem with it is that it doesn't do exceptionally well in low light situations and it gets really soft around 290-300mm..

    I was thinking that I should invest in the 70-200mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor...and get either a 2x or a 1.7x teleconverter.

Would this be a viable option or should I be looking at something different?

Oh no, I never abuse alcohol....I'm always very friendly towards it.

But to get back on subject. Wouldn't a converter introduce a degree of image degradation ? A x2 converter would degrade your max aperture to f5.6 from f2.8.
Perhaps you might be better going for a longer zoom where you would then normally steer clear of the minimum and maximum zoom ranges where the image softness tends to occur.
If it 'ain't broken........ Don't try to mend it !

I would suggest the Nikkor 80-400 VR. Some might say its AF is slow, but I don't see a problem with it. It's got a great range and quality is great throughout. I shoot with this lens on the D50, feel free to look at some of my results.

          Joey,
I actually already have, and am pleased with the results. It's just that aviation isn't the only thing I shoot and in low light...I don't think that lens would perform.

I would suggest the AF 80-200 D with the TC. It is a fantnastic lense, optical quality second to none

@Stefan, what makes the 80-200 superior to the 70-200 VR?

I find it pretty damn good in low light, non aviation situations. I've gotten usable results all the way down to like 1/10th. I've played a lot since I've got this lens and found it pretty good all around. I believe I've talked to before on AIM, if you want we can talk more about it...

Sure, I'd like, if you have them, to see some other shots with it. The 80-400 seems like it would be more versatile but the 70 or 80-200 F2.8 seems like it would be better for night time stuff. But I haven't been able to try any of them so I really can't say. Lemme know

The 80-200/f2.8 AF-D isn't surperior to the 70-200/f2.8 AF-S VR, it's just a great lower cost option with pretty much identical quality. If you can afford the 70-200/f2.8 G AF-S VR I so go for it, it's sweet (I've tried a friend's). If you would rather spend a few hundred less, go for the 80-200. You'll lose VR and not have the faster/quiet AF-S but quality is still amazing. I've had it for close to 10 years now and it's still going strong.

I would recommend a 70-200mm F2.8 Vr and the 1.7x TC. Ive got one, its a brilliant combo. Its fast and very sharp even with the TC which is great. The VR works very well on it and has helped me quite a bit. I was so surprised on the loss of camera shake compared to the Sigma 50-500mm which was a disaster in that area imo. This lens is perfect in low light giving me more than ample shutter speeds even at 4.8 with the TC at ISO200 on a D50.

I get my D2x tomorrow so hopefully it will perform even better

                        Cheers

Ben, I looked at your shots, and am quite impressed! You wouldn't happen to have any other shots that are non aviation that you have taken with that lens would you?

                              Ben,
Wow, those shots are amazing if you haven't sharpened them at all...wow.

I think I may just go with your setup if I can find a decnet auction on ebay. Thank you very much!

                              To all,

Thank you for all your suggestions and input. If anyone else has anything they would like to add, please do!
