  • Nikon Lens Advice

As a holiday gift I am thinking of buying myself a new lens. A lens for either static aircraft on the ground at the local airfeild and cabin shots.

I guess I would be looking for a wide angle lens.

My question is, whats the best Nikkor or Sigma Wide Angle lens available that would enable me to achive the above?

    Cheers

        18-200

        I've really come to like Nikon's 18-200mm

Very versatile, very fast, and it also has the advantage of Vibration reduction.

Very good range, especially useful on the ramp when you might have a bizjet at some fair distance, and a 737 right under your nose... no lens changes! so, less dust on your sensor!

          As far as Sigma are concerned www.karlu.com list a 20mm f1.8 at £300, 15mm f2.8 fisheye at £380 and an 18 - 50 f2.8 zoom at £326.

Nikon / Nikkor lenses tend to be much more expensive. At the site listed below I saw prices from £200 -£1,000 +.

Possibly a better site to go to would be www.dealtime.co.uk where you can search price and availability from many different sources.

It all very much depends on your needs and the lenses you currently own.

            Brian,

The 18 - 50 f2.8 zoom is along the lines I am looking for.

In that case I would probably go for the Sigma. The nearest Nikon is an 18 - 70 f3.5 - 4.5 at around £229 from www.ajpurdy.co.uk
              Alternatively, they have a 17 - 55 f2.8 at a whopping £949.

                  Shaggy -

I have the 17-55mm Nikkor f/2.8. You can't beat this lens. You have a D2X so you should put the right glass in front of it.

Shaggy, My plan of action created for yourself:

                        Sell All Nikon equipment

                        Buy Canon 30D and 24-105L & 100-400L.

                        Only kidding, hehe!

Sigma are generally solidly built lenses that will produce decent quality shots time and time again (well thats what I know for Canon Camera's) I can only assume it is the same for Nikon mounts.

However if you want to get the best results its always best in my experience to try and stick with the Mount brend (in your case Nikon). However 3rd party companies do produce fantastic images (Sigma, Tamron). Just my 2 cents..

                        Dave
                        Best regards,
                        Dave

Shaggy, I just bought the Nikon 24-120 3.5/5.6 AF-S G VR. Not maybe as wide angle as you would like, but a superb lens. www.graysofwestminster.co.uk will give you a good idea of what's available. They also give excellent, well thought out advice.

Mine cost £425 incidentally. And they advised against the 28-200 VR saying the range was too great to be effective on a D.200/D2x etc. Loss of quality.

                          Give them a call

                          Andy

The Sigma is not that good

                            The Tamron is better imhp

Or go rock solid with the Nikon 20mm prime.
