How do other remove dust spots?

I have been experimenting with the dust & scratches filter in photoshop elements to try and find an easier way to remove them, but since I have been doing that I now had nearly all shots rejected for manipulation.

I used to remove them by selecting a small area next to the spot and copying that and pasting over the top of the spot. It usually worked on a clear blue sky, but was hard to get right on a cloudy background.

If there were many spots to remove it is tedious doing it that way.

    Any help would be appreciated.

The healing tool is great for dust spots on most occasions.

I've done the cloning method, the dust and scratches tool works quite accurately if done with the right finesse (and it's friggin time consuming), lately I've been using the healing brush tool which seems to work very well, better than cloning but not so time consuming.

What works best for me, though, is using the cloning brush, then a bit of healing to clean it up a bit.

          Dust spots

I am using PS Elements 2, which does not have the healing tool.

Yes. Also, the healing tool should be above it.

                  dust spots

I had a go at using the clone tool, but I got an error message about the layer being locked.

It is locked because when you got the message, you were working on the "original" or background layer..

^^Try to create a new layer by going up to Layer > Duplicate Layer.. If it doesn't automatically creates a layer itself.
