  • D200 and 80-400VR

    Hi Guys,

    Anyone using this combo?
I have had some problems with the focus, some pictures come out soft.
I usualy shot at f8 and with my D70 the shuter speed was around 1000 and now the shuter speed drop to 500, increased the iso to 200 to get more speed.
Can someone tell me the settings used?

    Best Regards

I believe you are shooting under sunny conditions. Can you post some exampels with the full exif plz. That would be helpfull. 100% crops would be helpfull too.

F8 and 1/500 is what i'd expect for decent sunny conditions.
Alot of photos at MAN usually provide shutter speeds less than this and the camera is capable of providing a good sharp image, so i'm not sure why you need to push to 1/1000th.
Maybe your D200 provides less in-camera sharpening than your D70 does and requires more sharpening through post processing?

Thanks for the replys, the problem is: i don´t have a steady hand and the lens is a bit heavy so i want to increase speed. Tomorrow i would make some testing i post the results.
        thanks for all the help.

        Best Regards

I use the D50 + 80-400 VR combo and the only problem I had was shooting across a construction site...talk about soft. Other than that I've used the lens in both cloudy and sunny conditions and couldn't of been more pleased.

You haven't forgotten that ISO 200 was the minimum available on the D70.
So sunny 16 gave you... f8...1/800.
The exif shows photos with your D200 have been taken at ISO100.
I agree with other comments that good results would be expected at 1/400 1/500.It may just be a tightening of your technique.................use of the higher ISO of course starts to compensates for any flaws in technique.

Until I got my 200-400, the 80-400 was one of my most used lens. I have many ohtos in the database from it. I still use it for trips where I am packing light (the 200-400 cannot be used in the same sentence as "light").

On the D200 iso100, f8, and anything 1/320 and above I get great results.

What mode is the VR on? I set it to the mode where it is on as soon as you depress the shutter button even part way, rather than the mode where the VR kicks in when the shutter fires.

                Hello,

After a lot of shooting the result are good enough.
I was not using the right focus system.
Thanks for all the help and tips, here goes some results:

                ISO 100, 1/350, f8 @400

                ISO 100, 1/500, F8 @400

No procesing done to the pictures only resized for the web.

                Best Regards
