  • New Camera Advice

hi all, i am new here but i have been posting pics as skycruiser, the username for the forum was taken so i post as longreach747.

ok i will cut to it, i want to get a new digital camera to replace the one i am using.

    whats everyone using??

i am thinking of a Nikon D100, Canon EOS 10D, or the Nikon 5700 coolpix pro pack.

does anyone have a particular body or brand they swear by??

i dont want to spend more than about $1500USD.

    cheers.

Nikon Coolpix 5700 isn't a DSLR, the others are. But the Nikon Coolpix is under $1500, as the two others might be a higher price after lenses and other accessories. I have a Nikon 5700, and the AF is a little slow for fast action photography. However, it has suited me well (almost all of my 116 photos in the database were taken with it). Good luck! www.dpreview.com is also good for all of your digicam needs.

thanks for that, the 5700 i was looking at has attachments that effetively give you 380mm telescopic.

you simply attach them to the lens thats already mounted on the camera.

me and dpreview have been copping a good workout hehehe

i am there for hours on end trying to decide.

i am not fussed about body without lenses, i will pay extra for that, $1500USD is the max for the body though.

D100 body is more than $1,500 but you can get a 10D body for less than $1,500.

You will enjoy Canon products. I use an EOS 1V and it is a great camera. Very sturdy and my cameras get a very hard time and this has stood the tests.

I know a lot of people have gone digital but I stick to my slide film. Velvia and Provia are the way to go for me as well as the new Kodak E100GX which I tried out this weekend and was very impressed with it.

If you want any general canon feedback let me know.

P.S. Great news that Emirates start flying into Auckland on the 2nd. I am using them and heading to Dubai later in August. One of the best airlines out there.

                cheers for that Neville!!

i have been a fan of canon products for many years, i did have an EOS3 til someone decided to come and break into the house.

i have been looking at the pros and cons on dpreview, i think what won me was the fact that i can take 9pics in 3 seconds without the camera locking down, unlike the nikon which allows 3 then locks for 9 seconds.

offtopic: yes i think EK will be serving AKL 3 times a day, from melbourne, brisbane and sydney.

certainly will add some competition on this route.

                  Buy the 10D
It´s the best camera that you can get for 1500$.

                    That's a good one...!
Don't know what they were doing but I don't have any problems shooting more then 3 frames with my D100, and the camera does not "lock".

You may buy the body for $1500, but it is going sit on your desk until you buy another $1000 worth of lenses.

If I had 1500$ layin around, I'd get a used D30 and Canon 75-300 III or save some more and get a 10D and 100-400L

Glad you decided on the 10D. After using a Nikon D100 before and owning a 5700, the 10D is the best overall, hands down. I'm sure you won't be disappointed, I know I'm not!

Of course, if you have the extra dough, a 1Ds would be even better yet!

I have had the exact opposite experience that Jeremy had. I was ready to purchase a D60 when I found out just how aweful the focus is. I could not focus the damn thing while inside a showroom lit by flourescent lights! The salesman seeing my problem ran over and opened the blinds to the big main window to help the camera try and focus..... Still no luck. So I asked him...."how am I supposed to take available light photos indoors?"....... No reply.........

Picked up the Nikon D100, had the salesman close the blinds and BAM! Instant focus! Turned off half the room lights and it still focused.

Unless sunny outdoor pictures are all you are going to be taking, consider your options carefully.

No denying that the AF was the D60s Achilles heel ... fortunately it has superb image quality and, in what will perhaps come to be seen as the most critical point in the DSLR wars, had it in the shops well ahead of Nikon.

The 10D certainly addresses the AF issue. I'd suggest that the lens used would now be the main determinant in any D100/10D contest.

I think the key factor in any body choice would be the lenses in the system, and, at the moment, I think Canon has the upper hand. Optically there may not be much in it - especially in the "pro" range - but Canon has successfully incorporated its USM focusing and IS into its mid-range lenses, offering a wider range of capabilities.

                            Cheers,

                            Colin

this is the information that my local camera house agent gave me, he went through each camera with a fine tooth comb for me, also another difference was that the canon 10D prokit had all the softwares and some flash accesories, such as vertiacl grip and spare batteries, this came to $1600USD with the bonus prokit incl.

the nikon was minus these bonuses and still more expensive, so the canon it is.

just have to wait for stock and my insurance cheque now.

lenses,i told him what i was wanting to do with the camera and he pointed me to the 75-300. chances are i will have the lens before i have the body

hope to be using the hole kit by end of august!

thankyou all for your feedback and advice, it is better than reading Dpreview!
