Sam (good to see you back..even if you are city )

I submit my pics to the editors and they talk about what they are looking for so it gives me a good idea of what to shoot. of course I've had people trawling the db and seen a shot which they want to buy. works both ways. if you have a good image they like then if you send it them saves them time looking!

          Just a follow-up -

In retrospect, I should not have been specific in my original questions. Instead, I should have only asked what I was most curious about which would have been, 'has anybody ever heard of ENAV S.p.A Magazine. Is it real? I didn't want to start any ill-feelings about giving photos away.

What I'm here now for is to say it is done. The magazine published my photo which I gave to them for free. They did send me 5 copies of the magazine. Unfortunately, it's in Itallian so I can't read the corresponding article. They did surprise me last week when I recieved a very nice Christmas card from the editor.

Anyway, that's it. It was a nice learning experience for me and I really appreciated all the comments. Hope all is well with everybody. Have a safe and happy new year!

          Take care,
          Brad

            Getting your name out.....

Congrats Brad. Yo got your photo on a magazine. I think this thread had some good points ever regarding getting a photo in magazines. Somehow my previous post doesn't really justify now what I'm about to reply.

That I think the members were right about it, that It's nice to see your photo, read your name in a magazine, with or without payment for it, plus one stated that you got nothing to lose. No big deal.

I have seen on international magazines like Flight International, Airliner world and so on, and when I kinda see local area photographer's name under some of the photos, I sometimes envy them, wishing my name under those photos.

I don't even know how all this starts ahead, but I have a good bet that starting out sending good quality shots just to build their confidence (should they ever contact you!!!) should get all the dices up and rollen. Your reply was good to read about, knowing the outcome of this thread was great. Not something common in the forums. Thanks mate.

The only time I give my photos away for free (minus a photo accreditation and copy of the publication for my portfolio) is for someone who is self funding a book that is purely about aviation photography. My reasoning behind this is that they will be using hundreds of small photos and simply are not likely to have the sort of budget to be paying every single photog they ask. I don’t feel it worth getting $10 out of them for this. So ill let them have the shot on a single use copyright. Other than that sure I charge for usage. Ive made a fairly decent amount out of selling my shots and have paid off all my equipment some time ago. I don’t plug them to mags or publications as this is a hobby for me and not my primary income meanes. Most of my requests actually come from companies wanting to use the shots for brochures etc. For this I see absolutely no reason why I shouldn’t charge. And the companies are more than happy to pay. They get the photo; I get the income which slowly pays off my equipment. I can see why you guys want to get your 'name out there'. But there’s no reason why you shouldn’t be paid for a publication to use your work. After all they are making a profit off your work...... Shouldn’t you? Everyone’s going to have different views regarding this. Im not about to get p*ssed at one guy for giving away a shot that he could potentially earn hundreds of dollars for. I mean hey if you don’t want the money that’s your choice. Me however ill take those dollars and invest them in better equipment/paying off my owned equipment, or going away somewhere and shooting new subjects, uploading them and in tern (hopefully) selling copyright usage for them. It’s a hobby for me but it doesn’t hurt to pay off the thousands of dollars worth of equipment ive got either.

                Another good point there.

Not all of us has a good paying job. Saving up for camera gears is tough. Takes me roughly 3 months before I can even consider a good Canon lens.

Anyway getting something back for your work, even though it is only a hobby could definitely help you out cope your little problem. Just a matter of luck and time, when you should hit it, "hit it" I mean hit the chance, see what kind of publication they're working on, how many copies and so on.
And out from that you should be able to calculate how much to charge.

*If you don't want the money, that's your choice*
Uhh, that's a tough one. How about if you have a soft heart, and all you want or care for to begin with is giving the photo for free, no biggie might you even think. I really hope someday these kind of people with soft hearts will eventually change and demand charges for their work.

                *Halo over my head*

I've had two businesses contact me about my photos, one I sold and was a magazine cover for an International Aviation magazine, the other was for an engineering report involving an aiport I shot. I sold one, the other I let them use it for free. It boils down to the fact that I do this for a hobby and anyone can go out and get a picture, the exposure is more valuable to me than having cash.

I think there have been some very good points in this tread.

I recantly got my first photo into a magasine and did get payed for it. Ive had a good few enquiries thorugh my own personal website and other forums i use asking to use my photos and so far no one else was willing to pay for them.

The only time i have given a image away for free was to a vetern who whanted a print of this photo of B-17 'Pink Lady':

I simply did not have the heart to ask him for money.

Well i've never lost a 'photo publication oppertunity' through asking for payment. It seems 99% of the people who request photos from me (rightfully imo) expect there to be a useage fee depending on publication/size/format/print run etc. As said previously if you guys want to give away your photos for free then i have no porblems with that. I however choose to get paid for my work, and to get the exposure from the publicised work.

However one should say that in case of the Italian ENAV S.p.A Magazine it is a fiar case. They fullfill all their promises (and I also got a nice christmas card) and they are not commercial. the magazine is for free and distrubuted to italian airtraffic controlers and pilots to teach about newest deveoplment in air safety.

In that case I did give it away for free and I would do it again.
