  • End of the special America West 757s

Not sure if most of you are up to date with the latest news...

With the merger of America West and US Airways the fleet of AW jets is slowly being repainted into the US livery. I usually do not shoot the new US repaints as I'm too busy collecting pictures of the older HP aircraft here in LAS.

I have been getting email alerts as to when a HP aircraft heads to the paint shop and it saddens me when I hear of another special 757s being repainted.

As an update...the 'Ohio' livery was the first one repainted. Then I heard that the 'Arizona Diamondback' scheme was painted a few weeks ago. Last report was that the red 'Arizona Cardinals' has been repainted or is still in the paint shop.

I can usually see one of the special 757s every other day here in Las Vegas and I'm getting good shots of them before they disappear!! I saw 'Nevada' last week and I saw the yellow 'Arizona - City of Phoenix' yesterday but 'Teamwork' has not made an appearance lately.

I just wanted to let eveyone know...shoot them while you can....they will be gone for some time!!!!

    Dave,

The good news is that most of the 'themed' 757s are slated to be replaced with A319s, Ohio being the only notable exception. Some of the artwork I've seen for the to-be-painted A319s looks very, very cool!

Thanks for the heads up Dave, was great to shoot a few America West aircraft at LAS this November. It would be great if any new Airbus aircraft are painted in current special schemes, will have to get out to PHX/LAS again soon to shoot them!

I saw that plane as I was driving by SNA about 2-3 weeks ago I think, flew directly over the car while I was on the 405 freeway

        That's good news!

Well, the Airbus certainly isn't a worthy successor to the 757 rocketship , but certainly better than seeing the liveries dissappear altogether.

The 757 with the Arizona Cardinals paint scheme, 908AW, has returned
from ROW painted in the new US Airways standard color scheme. That
leaves the Arizona and Nevada flags and the Teamwork aircraft as the
last remaining painted 757's. Just one A319 still painted in the full
America West color scheme now also, 822AW (2 A319's at ROW).

Nice shot Dave! I have to get back out to LAS soon, especially with my new 30D and 100-400 .

It's a shame that the 757's won't carry the special liveries but at least t hey are keeping some semblance of uniqueness. I remember back in 2000 I flew on the Cardinals and the Nevada plane and it was awesome watching rampers watch us taxi by.

Got them all on paper prints back in 1999, but I guess I'll never get them on the digital camera

Thanks for the heads up, I saw the Cardinals one when I was at the SFO USO a few weeks ago, I was hungry and decided to go grab something to eat in the food court rather than setting up my tripod, but when I returned it was gone. Looks like I missed my chance.

I'll head down for the evening HP 752 arrival for the next few weeks if I can and see what I can get.
