    Yo all..

Seriously considering this as my new body. If I got it I would purchase the battery grip with it so size isn't going to be a problem as I am already well used to the 300D with Battery grip. Just want to hear what people think of it (quality of images/ LCD / Noise problems?). I am an ametuer photographer and it will be used for aviation only (maybe occasional other use) and am not going to go pro as an occupation hence why I am going for this rather than the 30D. My lenses are 24-105L F4 IS & 100-400L F4.5 - F5.6 IS & will equip myself in the not too distant future with probably the Canon 10-22 or a suitable alternative.

Pictures would be nice as well..

    Thanks in advance lads..
    Best regards,
    Dave

Hi there, you mention the above lens, whats your view on that?, I am in the process of selling my SIGMA 50-500mm, with a view of replacing it with the Canon 100-400mmL IS, am I making the right choice?
      Cheers

        Hey Dave,

My 400D arrived yesterday so its only first impressions. Firstly, I also upgraded from the 300D with a 350D thrown in for a couple of weeks between 300D going and 400D arriving. I took the 400D out shooting last night and found the size to be no problem, even still, my battery grip is coming in the next couple of weeks which will make it a bit more sturdy like the 300D. From what I've taken so far, about 40 images, I've only edited one quickly and looked at the rest, the image quality is very nice. No noise issues at all. The LCD is very nice. I was a bit hesitant at first when I read all the info was to be displayed on the one big LCD but it is also very nice. Very clear and great for looking at your shots afterwards. Also, it has a little sensor between the eyepiece and screen so when you bring the camera up to your eye to take a shot, the LCD will flick off and then come back on once you are done. I've read online of some people bagging the sensor cleaning system but I'm not sure why. I took a few photos of the sky at F32 to check out the factory dust when I got it home, there was quite a bit. I used the 'Clean Now' function in the menu as well as turning the camera off and back on (two more cleans) and this got rid of all of the dust! Very impressive.
From what i've used it so far, at the airport and around home, it is a very nice camera and I'm very happy with it!

        Hope this helps,

        Tim

I don't think you'll get a massive quality boost to be honest. The Bigma is pretty decent glass and in good weather there is little difference between the two. The 100-400 may yield better results in poorer weather due to the IS.

I'd also consider a 70-200 with a 1.4x (either an F4 or an F2.8 copy), which is what i've converted to from the 100-400. The f2.8 is noticably more consistent than my 100-400 was.

I think I have a "good" copy of the 100-400L as I rarely get shots lacking sharpness (screeners may argue differently though I don't recall many soft rejections ). I also had the 50-500 and found it struggled to produce the goods in anything but ISO100 F9 weather so I got Jessops to reduce the price of the 100-400 to around £900 and I got the 100-400. To tell the truth I love it, not only does it have the range but it has the quality images to go with it.

However, I have seen many great images produced by the Sigma so don't get me wrong its a very good piece of glass and its up to you which you go for (money can be an issue). Check http://www.fredmiranda.com for reviews on the 2 lenses by users.

As James noted another contender is the 70-200L F4 IS with a 1.4 converter have heard nothing but good things about this lens so maybe you should look into this as well.

Murt, if you have your heart set on a 100-400L go with that, if you are looking for a cheaper option with only a minor reduction in versatility go with the Bigma. If you study the 70-200 and find that suites you best go with that! Be prepared to work with any lens and I can assure you, you will love the results.

Thanks Tim for the review, any chance you could PM the picture you took? I'm glad you like it and hopefully when I get mine it won't have to much dust in it to start off with. Keep the reviews coming
            Best regards,
            Dave

With your glass i'd miss the 400d and go straight for the 30D or wait for the 40D. Once you've added the grip into the 400D a 30D is only a couple hundred more. With those lenses and a proposed 10-22 i'd say you'd have the finance available to do that...don't skimp on the body.

The only problems I have encountered with the Bigma is....when taking photos at 500mm, the quality drops. And as i havnt got a steady hand, I am hoping the IS will help. The other prob with Bigma is taking overhead shots and trying to zoom in....I am sure other Bigma users have experienced this.

100-400 is hit and miss at 400mm too....some report major softness (my copy isn't particularly good) at 400mm. I rarely had a useable 400mm shot. Others will tell you otherwise though and that their 400mm is great.

Im really looking into the 400D as a second body, great thread so far. Glad to hear that the sensor clean function isnt just a marketing gig.

While this may not help, I used the 400D/XTi for a day to try it out. The things I didnt like was the size really. Way to small for my hands anyway. Then again Im 6'4" and have lengthy hands. I ended up going with the 30D beacuse of size of the camera, and the image quality I saw when I used it. To be honest, I'm in love with the 30D now . Large screen, like the 400D. Thats one thing I like about it. Awesome for reviewing Images.

Yeah, Good thread so far. I noticed that the 70-200mm F4 IS was available at www.ac-foto.com only a couple of months ago,

now I'm considering that rather than the F2.8'er because of financial issues these months. I want to buy me one of those F2.8's (for myself) but it's a wrong month to become selfish right now. Haven't yet been out buying xmas gifts. Wahhhh

My local photoshop over here in CPH has discouraged me to buy the 30D, he mentioned that, I should wait alittle bit longer instead, cause the 40D will prolly be out sooner than we think. I previewed the 400D (XTi) like you said, the bigger screen is a wonderful thing to have as opposed to the Canon XT's 1.8 inch screen.

Is that in relation to the lens trying to lock onto and focus on an aircraft with a contrail for example? If so, from my experience, any lens that i've pointed in the sky has sometimes had trouble getting focussed...even my mighty 70-200 sometimes takes a couple of goes to get the object in focus. Helps if you switch over to centre point focus too.

Now you have me thinking James!!!! 100-400 or 70-200??? I have now sold my Bigma and have around £1000 (approx $2000) to spend on a lens. being a novice with lenses....what is the difference with a lens with f2.8 and one with f4.5-f6? how do the f values affect my pictures?

F2.8 will allow you to shoot in murkier/darker conditions as it will allow more light to enter the camera, but to be honest with avaition photog, if I need to use f2.8 it's usually time to give up and go home. I've always tended to stick at or around f8 as this seems to be an L glass sweet spot giving optimum sharpness. I'm questioning my need for 2.8 now but i only got it as the 70-200 f4 LIS wasn't available a year ago.

You might have noticed that i'm being a bit harsh on the 100-400 but i'm only going from personal experience. I have a love/hate relationship with it and since i've got my 70-200 it's sat in its box. I loved it as it was extremely flexible. I hated it cos the IS failed after 6 months and had to be replaced. It then had a new AF motor about a year ago at great expense and i managed to get a copy that's soft at 400mm (as many owners report)...although much better since it was recalibrated.

My 70-200 f2.8 has however shone from day 1. The first time i used it in sunny weather i was blown away by the quality. It's far more consistent focus wise too with many more "keepers" than my 100-400. I use it at MAN with a 1.4x with minimal quality loss.

I'd certainly consider the 70-200 f4 LIS plus 1.4x as a good alternative to the 100-400.
