  • What lens?

    Hello guys.

Im getting myself a DSLR for crimbo (350D) out of my christmas money and abit i have in the bank. The cam comes to £400, so that leaves me with around £200 to spend on a lens. Im looking at proberly 300mm lenses. Would the Canon 75-300mm III USM be my best bet?

    Cheers Sam

    Hey Sam,
I was in the same boat a few years back and got myself a 75-300. It's good at around f/8

I recommend it, and only later should you get bitten by the 'L' glass

    See you around MAN sometime

Yes, that lens is a classic "my first dslr" lens. I had one with my 300d a few years back and keep it to f8 and you should be fine.
If funds allow and you could get to £380 you could also look at the Canon 70-300 IS (the new one, not the inferior 75-300IS) which has received good reviews.

Cheers! Looks like the 75-300mm it is then
Dont think i could afford the £300+ for the IS, but im sure thr 75-300mm III USM will do me fine until i get abit older and more advanced using a DSLR

        Cheers, Sam

I use one most of the time Sam and it has never caused me any major problems, although it loses a fair bit of sharpness at the top end.

One bonus is that it is quite a thin lens so you can put it up against the holes in the perimeter fencing wire and get a decent shot without the wire getting in the way!

If you are mainly into the airport side of things it will be just the job, assuming you can get decent access like at Manc. If you are wanting to do some low fly stuff, like at Mach when you are stuck on a mountainside, then I have found it more or less insufficient and you would need something with a better, both longer and in quality, zoom.

I would only really be at MAN so im sure it would be enough for me My P&S now is around 300mm, and that is sufficient

added to which, te 350d has a cropped sensor so we get a 480mm lens for the price of a 300
