  • What's up with JP's Compression?

I just got back from JFK and upon uploading my shots from Howard Beach I noticed an increased amount of noise...enough to get me around 6 rejections. Here are a few...

Neither of those photos had that much grain upon upload, and it seems I'm not the only one having these problems as my buddy Justin Idle is also having extra grain added upon upload. I've had to resort to blurring my sky to fix the problem. Anyone else noticed a decrease in quality??? Was there a change made to the amount of comression added to uploaded photos?

Nope, the amount of compression hasn't changed in the past three years. If you upload a shot with a lot of sky which already has clearly visible grain (which both of those shots do), it will be 'enhanced' during the upload process. We do it, however, to keep filesizes reasonable, as most photos uploaded are over 800kb to start with, and not everyone has a high speed internet connection to surf JP.net on.

ok Chris thanks...its not often I upload shots with just aircraft and sky, and when I do its hardly at 400mm..perhaps I just stumpled into an area where I'm not to familiar.

I tend to find my 100-400MM L lens suffers from a slightly increased grain level at around 400mm when shooting aircraft against a blue sky than at a shorter distance. I wouldn't worry about it to much. Possibly try selective sharpening on the aircraft itself, as theres no point in sharpening a solid colour like blue sky. Your only going to bring out grain/noise.

Joey, I see that you use exposure compensation of -1 stop. Looking at the exposure settings (1/2000 @ f8, hopefully at ISO100). I guess, the original is quite underexposed. An underexposed photo will be prone to noise, when brightening up.

Just as comparison. This shot here ... [photoid=5845194] ... was taken at 1/500 f8

Nice work Gerardo, I hadnt noticed this info on his shot. But your right exposure compensation does effect noise/grain levels when processed in photoshop.

Yes Gerardo, that was quite dumb of me. I normally shoot at -0.7, ISO 200 (D50 doesn't have 100)...however when I first got out to Howard beach I shot a couple of lighter aircraft directly over my head (shooting at their belly and the light strong on one side) and everything was looking really blown out and overall ugly, cause the camera saw the dark underside and compensated. I just started to panic (it was my only day at JFK). I should've used my main subjust of the day, the heavies on the long loop off of 31L as my reference, so that was my mistake. Owell live and learn.

                D'oh!!!

Golden rule number 1...always check your settings before you shoot. I have to admit i've done it myself on more than one occassion though.

Ah sh*t most of my shots from the Red Bull Air Race on the race day were screwed because id underexposed by 0.5 a stop. This coupled with beer, red bull, red bull girls , and the lure of free food kinda took my attention away from checking my shots until i got home. D'oh is right. lol

I thought it was the Utterly butterly girls distracting me. (well ex utterly utterly, i forget what they are now)
You can only get one better, the girls riding proper Stearmans.
