I've got both the 100-400 and the 70-200 IS L F2.8, no converter. for Av stuff and wildlife the 100-400 is perfect. I use the 70-200 at the airport aswell as the 70mm is required at some spots. The sharpness of the 70-200 is a different class than the 100-400. both lens do a job and am happy with both.

I've heard great stories and some horror stories about the 100-400 but thats life I suppose and what warranties are for!

Have finally managed to pick up my 100-400mm IS L USM lens, looks and feels great, all I need now is for this darn Manchester weather to improve.

Now you have IS the weather shouldnt stop you trying for some form of motion blur at low shutter speeds! Had my first outing with my new set up on Saturday (100-400 L IS with 30D+Grip).

The first outing I had with the 100-400mm IS at MAN....I had difficulty opening my car door, it was that windy I don't think any amount of IS will compensate these winds lol....second outing it was torrential rain.....I sat in my car for 1 hr in AVP car park wishing the weather better...it never happened. So now I back at work.....

I notice the Sigma 80-400 OS lens has been drawn into this conversation, as someone who pondered the Canon 100-400L vs the Sigma 80-400 I'll offer my thoughts below (quoted from a previous discussion)

It is heavy but having operated a Sigma 170-500 before I'm familiar with big heavy lenses! The Optical Stabilization system works a treat and certainly helps keep the images sharp. Sharpness varied from shot to shot but I was trying some pretty silly things with it just to see what it could and couldn't do..... I'd like some more experience before I offer my final thoughts! Autofocus, yep it's slowish and noisy (the 100-400L is silent!) but it does the job to my satisfaction. Having used the Canon 75-300IS USM for the last few months I can say with confidence that the Sigma 80-400 OS beats it hands down.... in every aspect! What impressed me most? Colour accuracy and sharpness. What bothered me most? Not a great deal, the ring type zoom is a bit stiff but I just whacked the hood on and used it as a push pull....... which sort of worked pretty well!
Since writing the above many months back I've had ample opportunity to use the Sigma 80-400 and am more than happy with the results I'm getting. Sure I would have loved the 100-400L, but I'm happier with having put the money I saved towards my 30D which replaced my antique D60.

Interesting that you should say you chose the Sigma over the canon Craig. I went the oppersite way after having issues with my Sigma 70-200mm and got the Canon 100-400. I too have saved and have very recently replaced my aged (but much loved) Canon D60 with the 30D.

Keep in mind that people who had problems with this lens are more prone to say they were unhappy, than people who love it.
It's just the way it works. If you're satisfied with something, you don't have to talk about it so much.

The 100-400L is a wonderfull lens. You cannot find a finer lens which covers this zoom range. Canon has a bit of a problem with their quality control. I don't see why so many people complain about this lens. These people sadly didn't replace their lens with a better cop. There's one rule you have to obey with this lens which is quiet simple, don't shoot in low light. I never go under F/7.1, since my copy gets softer near F/6.3. It's still perfectly fine for most people but I am a sharpmonkey! Since spotting is usually done in good weather its not a problem.

It's gotten one of the best ratings for a zoom lens at Fredmiranda: 9 (137 reviews) http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/s...&cat=27&page=1

                                Sam,
