Only if you throw away everything you don't upload.
I keep the TIFFs I scan, which are 10MB each on average, and the digicam output which are 1.5MB each AND the 900K files I upload.
About 75% are scans, so the average size for each picture I keep plus it's uploaded file is (((3*10.5+2)/4)+(2*((3*10+1.5)/4))/3 = 99.5/12 = 8.29MB per image.
On your 40GB disk that would mean 4939 images, not a lot at all (I shoot that in a single year).
