Has anyone been to Warsawa Chopin airport?

If so, what are the spotting areas like there? Easy to get to? A nightmare?

Are the areas good for photography, like at Dusseldorf when you are right next to the main apron on the terminal roof?

    Cheers

    Phil

I have not been myself but but have looked into it plenty of times in the past. From the shots in the DB it seems the spotters deck at WAW is similar to the one at DUS.

Yes, I was at Warsaw Chopin Airport yesterday flying back to ZRH. AS for the spotting location, I haven't yet to get up there, becuase of the crappy winter weather and that most of the EU viewing terraces are closed due to "installation of glass walls" for security reasons.

I was twice in Warsaw to spott. There are many of great points for photography and always someone with camera who can help you, keeps company, gives information or something. Check this link please. It´s a map from www. epwaspotters.org website with spotting points: http://www.epwaspotters.org/images/epwamapa.gif or this one from www. lotnictwo.fora.pl (unfortunetly only polish version but with google map): http://airnews.pl/map.html . I like this airport, was only twice, but I had always good time. Traffic is pretty good, something like in Düsseldorf, but without so many charter and holiday flights. That means you have no tousends of tourist companies. For online timetable check Okecie website: http://www.lotnisko-chopina.pl/?lang=en . It´s normal european airport with regular BAA, AF, LH, SN, SK, LX, SU,KL, AZ, TK, AY and more flights... of course many planes from polish LOT operating from Warsaw (type: ERJ145,170,175, B767,737, Eurolot ATR), also lowcoast airlines like easyjet, Norwegian, Centalwings, Wizzair etc. You can see aircrafts form Tupolev to Airbus. Look at this google map..point 10 is a small hill done extra for spotters All main places where you can take photos are easy to find...So...there are a lot of spotters from Warsaw, members of jp.net so maybe someone can give you more infos...

Going to Warsaw also intrests me and although this link that Marcin Domanski posted is in Polish, http://airnews.pl/map.html, the map on the page shows vantage points around the airport. My first question is, does anyone know the best vantage point to go to and secondly, how easy is it to get to these points, ie, bus, taxi, walk?
My third question is, can anyone recomend any decent (not to expensive, if possible) hotels nearby?

            Many thanks.

long story guys to begin with, the observation deck used to be better in past and its best days are gone... anyway, you always had the sun in your face for most of the day over there and the best spots are around the airport. don't pay too much attention to the first map (in gif) as its outdated. better is the google one. you have public transport and its quite easy to reach the following spots: 2, 3, 11. maybe 8. the rest you will need a car or bike to reach without making too much effort. spot nr 10 is a spotters hill - best for most of the day and most of the runway configurations. recommended (in winter however wind blows as hell and theres always windchill of 5-10 degs less than the real temepretaure, so wear warm). 11 is easy to reach, only for approaches on 11. nr 2 excellent in the morning when 29s in use for takeoffs. nr 8 and 9 good but if you hate fence-photos you wont like it. and definitely the worst place to reach. for one day spotting I would recommend early morning at the observation deck, and then go to spot nr 10, but it would take some time, about an hour on the bus.

there are some small private hotels near rwy 15 threshold, dont know the prices however. ofcourse you have three chain hotels: courtyard (with detailed flight info at the reception), novotel and airport hotel but all of them are around 100eur per room/night. or more.

              ask questions I will respond

Great info Pawel, thanks very much.

Krakow seems far quieter than Warsaw movements wise but Ive been told by a Polish friend it is THE place for a night out not just in Poland but in most of Europe so its a weighing up job! Beer or planes, beer or planes hmmmmm....

If in krakow, don't miss the amazing aviation museum they've got! A real delight, including a lovely collection of pre-war lightplanes, World War II delights like a Spitfire, Tiger Moth, Schturmovik and what not, plus the great collection of Russian fighters, bombers and helos.

Not to be missed are the Vietnamese F-5 and A-37!

Just grab the tram that goes to the Nova Huta church (in itself worth a visit too!) and watch out for a DC-3 wing rising vertically from the ground! That's the Museum's entrance!

Or else, ask for it - Poles are really nice people, if you had to ask for it in Polish it's pronounced

Mu Ze Um Lovv Its Nah (Museum Lowitzna)

                            Enjoy!
