  • Spotting and photography at ATL questions

Hi all, I'm new so please bear with me on these questions,

I'm planning a trip next September to Atlanta to do a bit of spotting and photograhy. I've been told to stay at the Renaissance, is this the best hotel? If so if I request an airport view will I get one? Also can anyone advise me please on the best rooms and whats the best way to get these rooms?

I prefer slides in my photography so what lenses will I require, would a 300mm be too small to take pics of CRJ's etc....

Many thanks in advance for any help and all the best for 2007.

Renaissance is the place to stay, request an airport view, you will almost always get one, especially if you book in advance. Anything above the 5th floor will be OK.

300mm will be fine for 700/900 CRJ's on the outer runway which will be used for landings, 100/200's may need something a tad bigger, inner runway will be too far for CRJ's but fine for 757 and above.

You'll need to bear in mind that the sun comes across from left to right, you'll probably not be able to shoot anything from around 11:30am - 3:00pm, especially with slide film, having said that it'll probably be too hot, I was there in early Sept 2006 and it was 90+ with high humidity. Much too hot for this Mancunian! Hotel has an outdoor pool which is useful.

If you're travelling around, both Charlotte and Nashville are around 4-5 hours drive, northeast and west respectively, both have good viewing areas though not much good before mid-day

Thanks for the reply Colin, some good info there for me to note. What time does it go dark there at night? I'm looking forward to just relaxing in the heat and blowing a hole in my Delta fleet.

      Cheers, Steve

You should be good for photos until about 7:30pm, it goes dark very quickly though, no twilight like here.

In the morning from around 7am onwards is good, unfortunately the best freighters will land on the far runways.

Never mind Delta, a couple of days and you'll get most of the airTran fleet!

AF have a couple of flights, usually 777's, LH use A340-300's, KLM was 767's but that might be a 330 now, BA a 777, these arrive between 2and 5pm, Korean use a 744 which comes in around 9am. JM use a 321 but it goes out early AM and usually on the far side
