  • Canon 1.4 x MK11 Extenders...........?

    Hi,
I've just purchased a Canon 70-200mm f2.8L IS and am busy testing it out, (my first efforts are in the queue right now) ! The lens feels like a great piece of kit and am sure the results will be as good as they look on my screen. My question to you guys is about the extenders for these Canon lenses, are there any good do you lose alot of quality or are they well worth it to give you that bit more reach when you need it ? Mac

1.4x is great with very little quality loss (i've got one and love it). You retain autofocus with the 70-200, buy it with confidence.
2x i've heard isn't as good, but i've not used one, but apparently quality drops through the floor.

It's one of the greatest combinations with the Canon system. I'd say it's a must buy.

What max focal length will it give me with the 70-200mm ?

New max focal length is 280mm. I have both the 1.4x and 2x convertors for my 70-200. Am about to sell the 2x, to many instances where it has let me down. Can be good in certain situations, but not anything trying to track fast moving objects. 1.4x is brilliant though. Combined with the 70-200, is by far the best lense combo i have used.

How does the 1.4x work with the 70-200 f/4?

Thanks Brendan and James, had a look at some of your shots with the combo 70-200 1x4 extender and think they look very good. Cheers for the advice chaps, will be getting an 1x4 extender asap.

Just don't expect the 1.4X II to produce stunning results in shit WX , well not for me anyway !

Apart from that it's fantastic however for really low light I still prefer it without any extender I had the 2X II and sold it pretty quick smart for a profit I might add too however my reason being I usually shoot at f/6.3-f/8 and nothing below f/11 was totally satisfactory with the 2X II

Cheers for the advice Will, I would always try to shoot with sunshine when photographing aviation, not a fan of poor weather days, although we do get quite a few here in the UK.
I am really looking forward to the airshow season this year with this lens combo i should get some great results, will upload to JP later this year !
