  • Advice on new Canon lense

    Dear All
    In a month or two i am probably going to buy the Canon EF 100-400mmL lense for my 10D,can anyone with this lense let me know how it is,ie to photo with,weight,size and image quality.....
    I have a Canon 75-300mm lense at the moment,which is great but i notice quite a lot of colur abberattion on it(i think it is known as purple fringing on full zoom)will the 100-400mmL lense have this problem.
    Any advice more than helpfull.

    Cheers

      I have had the 100-400 lens for about a year and I am very, very pleased with it. The only disadvantages are its heavy weight and high price, you'll get used to the push-pull zoom. Have a look at my pics, most of them were taken with it.

        Hi Ian,

        I have got this lens recently with my new 10D.

        It is one of the very best Canon lenses, you will love it, the IS is superb.
        The lens is heavy and the push/pull zoom takes some adjusting to, it doesn't feel natural at first.
        But the old addage you get what you pay for applies here, big price, big quality.

        My recent shots have been taken with this lens, here are a few (cue shameless plug fest )

        [photoid=122675]
        [photoid=122056]
        [photoid=121991]
        [photoid=121734]
        [photoid=121725]

        In short, you will love it !

        BTW, I use the 75-300 IS as well, and I don't get any colour abberation, perhaps your lens has been damaged??

        Regards

        Garry

          Dear All
          Thanks for the replies folks,when you say it is heavy,it's probably only a bit heavier than my 75-300mm lens now,don't you think,i suppose you just get used to it after a while.
          i had to think about the push-pull zoom on the 400L lens compared to mine and with that you twist the zoom,don't you.
          The fringing issue on mine,i have never dropped or knowingly damaged the lens from new,so i don't know about that one,but it is not that bad.

          Anyway thanks for now.

            I forgot to ask,do you get a lens cap with the lens,if not what is the fitting for the lens cap?

            Thanks

              Ian,

              No, its A LOT heavier than your 75-300 - 100-400IS weighs almost 1.4kg whereas the Canon 75-300USM weights about 0.5kg so its nearly three times the weight. Yes, you get used to the push-pull quite quickly. And yes, you get a lens cap... and a gigantic lens hood, and a removable tripod mount, and a carry case that externally looks like its been made out of cast-off carpet.

                Hello Skymonster
                What i'm trying to ask (badly) is do you think it will be to heavy to follow fighters all over the sky (so to speak) like i can with my lens now.

                  No, panning is fine, it just gets a bit weighty after 4 hours !!

                  I wouldn't dangle it round your neck (unless of course you have the neck strength of Mr T), I hold mine using the tripod mount between shots.

                  It's not so heavy you can't pick it up or pan, just over the course of a day's shooting it weighs you down a bit.

                  Cheers

                    Here are a couple photos of myself using this lens this past weekend. As you can see, it's quite a bit larger (and heavier) than most normal 400mm glass.
