  • Safely Cleaning Camera Lense w/ out scratching it (need to remove finger print!!)

So I've had my camera for a while it isn't anything fancy like an SLR it has a fixed lense it's a kodak P850, but anyways I have a fingerprint on my lense (as to how it got there I accidentally touched it once) It hasn't really affected my photos but obviously my exposures have a glaring out of focus print on it so I'd really like to get rid of it but how ?? with out scratching the lense what cleaning stuff can I easily obtain to clean my lense regularly/ get rid of this print on the lense.

Head to your local photo store and ask for a lens pen. It should only be a couple of dollars. One end has a soft brush that can wipe away dust without scratches and the other side has a special "eraser" (I don't know the technical term) that takes out fingerprints, grease and other gunk from lenses.

Once you get it, just breathe gently on to the lens and wipe the fingerprint away with the lens pen. Then keep the pen in your camera bag.

If you are unsure, best thing to do is take it in and have someone look at it who knows what they are doing. Even better if you have them show you exactally what to do.

OT: Didn't know you were a member on jp.net, Justin! And since 2004?! Anyway, soooo glad you finally decided to join us.

Yeahh don't post much but you know I joined for emergencies like these my friend from Spain has come to visit and me and him and my girlfriend are going to KAUS early saturday morning to spot and I'm afraid that the fingerprint might have all along been ruining the performance of my camera. Anyways hopefully some more JP.netters will pop up for me this next visit.

Cool. I'm looking for every excuse to fly this summer and I'm planning to blow all my cash, might even spend a day in AUS to come out there and spot with you. Have fun with your friend and let me know when you guys fly on VATSIM, I'll join you if I have nothing else to do.

Chances are that it will have no effect on the quality of your pictures, unless it's a really big one or something. But your best bet is a lens pen as mentioned before. They should be no more than $10.

I keep a microfiber cloth and a blower brush in my camera bag. You can get the cloth wherever they sell eye glasses. It will clean your smudges and will not scratch your lens. The blower brush does a better job of removing specks IMO than a lens pen.

Meh i use my jumper. If you've got a good high end filter you wont have issues (unless you like to roll around in the sand). You dont need to pussy foot around with these things, just dont be a tool and try rubbing it off with wire wool.

Philistine!! How do you expect all these high-priced photographic stores to make money on cleaning fluids and equipment if you make recomendations like that!! Tsk, no sense of propreity whatsoever!!

I have a lens filter on which means i only have to clean the filter and not touch the lens itself. I've got some lint free pec pads which do the job nicely..or if out in the field and haven't got anything...jumper sleeve or t shirt.

Sandpaper works very well in this situation. Give it a try.

I picked up a lens cloth at a photo store for 8 bucks. Works pretty good and it's easy to use.
