  • JetPhotos US A380 Scoop

Well, it looks like JP is the only site so far that has A380 pics from today's landings in NY and LA. Well done, I was looking forward to seeing the shots, and this is the only site, and has been for the past 5 or 6 hours, that has the shots so far. Great job by the screeners and shutterbugs for getting these images up so fast!

I was there at JFK and it was quite a sight to see it turning on finals. That thing is mammoth! I got a couple pictures of it. Man that thing was awesome!

I know I'll get slammed for this but here goes...

Most (but not all) of the posted shots from today's events so far (23 at the time I wrote this) are either over-exposed, backlit or a combination of the two. Jetphotos hosts over 1,000 A380 photos at this point. I guess just because the plane(s) went somewhere new today it's a reason to accept photos that normally wouldn't cut it on this site.

      Slam on...

Thanks Tanner. Glad to see I'm not the only one.

You can add me as another member to your club. I don't get all the fuzz either. Sure, it is a great thing for people to see the plane in person, but as you said yourself, there are already plenty of A380s on here for the folks that don't see the A380 in person, and from a picture, it doesn't really make a difference whether the airport is LHR, TLS, FRA, JFK or LAX.

Judging by the views those photos get, I have to say, that there are a lot of people interested in the first flight of an A380 to the US. So, if you don't like it, don't open the photos.

I've only opened maybe 2 or 3 of them. One can plainly see the flaws just by viewing the thumbnails.

I opened one just to see the quality since I knew it didn't look so great in the thumbnail.

Perhaps this was just a way for JP to beat the "blue site" for who had their photos online first? Of course not!

Surely some of these photos would not have been accepted otherwise.

Agreed, some photos should not have been accepted. But we don't go and delte them now. They're in, and that's it.

Our goal was simply to allow our visitors to simply have a look at what we felt is indeed newsworthy. The photos views say, we were right. As we don't know, what A.net plans and what not, we didn't have any scope to "beat the "blue site" " (as mentioned above) whatsoever. Believe it or not: we were simply acting like a news agency and we thought, the first landing of the A380 on US soil is news worthy. That's it, not more not less.

in my personal opinion not speaking as crew member, I admit that, if there is a lesson to be learned, it's indeed that we should have set some quality standards as well, and we are discussing this right now. But, do you remember Sam Chui's shot of the A380 first flight? Yes, it was backlit, but now a legend. So, what gives? The audience enjoyed this shot then, the audience enjoyed the shots on Jpnet now. Love it or hate it...

I vaguely recall reading somewhere here that for a newsworthy shot, one of a rare aircraft unlikely to be photographed again or from an unusual or rare location etc would attract a certain amount of leeway in the quality stakes.

That's what I like about JP net. It doesn't seek to have photographic perfection in every shot regardless of angle of view,. It's an enthusiasts site ( which coincidentally seems to be getting more visits lately from non-photographers ) which aims to please a greater cross-section of aviation minded people than some other sites.

Anet aims towards perfection. OK, fine with me. I occasionally upload there when I get a shot that I think meets their requirements and I'm starting to get a very few accepted there.

Yes, some of the American A380 shots were maybe not quite up to scratch but I am happy with that, being secure in the knowledge that if I were to upload a lower quality pic of a BA A319 landing at Gatwick it would be quite rightly rejected.

Perhaps this would be a good time for all to sit back and take a breath ?

Chui's photo was major news. It was the first flight...ever. While sure it is backlit, and sure there is some grain, the fact is that is a much better quality photo than most that were just added.

I do not feel so strongly about it being a ticker, as JP is staying consistent with everytime it goes somewhere, it has a ticker.

The only downfall is that some are overexposed, some are underexposed, some are grainy, some have weird color casts, and some are soft. It is very newsworthy, but who's to say that the people viewing don't just need one quality shot of it on approach (no one can tell whether it's California air or France air), touching down, taxiing, at the gate.

IMO, none of those criteria apply to yesterday's events. If they want to load a bunch of high quality shots from a single day of a single plane, I have no problem with that.

Using your criteria, the first time any of WN's special livery planes flies to SFO this fall will be a cause for immediate approval from the queue.

Now THIS is a great A380 shot from yesterday!

Newsworthy? What's next? The first landing at Mogadishu accepted with priority? The A380 has been flying for 2 years now. Everyone knows what the A380 looks like. What's the big deal about a first visit? Let them wait in line in the queue and get some other more interesting shots on first...
