  • An apology to the screeners...

I recently had this pic rejected for incorrect registration. The personal from the screener said that the registration should be A4O-KC and not A40-KC.

    http://web2.jetphotos.net/viewqueued_b.php?id=1393788

"Huh !!" thought I, "that's what it says."

Thinking an error had been made I appealed. For some reason the appeal result email never got to me so I've emailed the screeners direct.
Based on what I now know, I really wish I hadn't so please ignore it guys.

    Now then...In my defence...I didn't know that A4O isn't "A Four Zero"
    I do now know that it's "A Four O"

Soooooooo......to the screeners, a big huggy, kissy (metaphorically speaking) apology for making a total twat of myself and wasting their time.

(For the benefit of our American cousins "Twat" refers to a part of the female anatomy. The other word is far too rude to use here)
If it 'ain't broken........ Don't try to mend it !

We Americans know what the word means, Brian, we just don't consider it less rude than the other term.

It is something us screeners see quite often Brian and is an easy mistake to make. Tony is right you do have a glowing plane there and run the risk of getting an over processed rejection.

Hope to catch up with you soon (and not in a work related way!)

Thanks Jid, As we speak I'm pulling it and reprocessing. Apologies to our cousins over the water if "the word" upset anyone. We tend to use it as an expression of annoyance !

....and another lesson from this is....

If you're going to use the Shadow/Highlight tool it is absolutely ESSENTIAL to select the aircraft only during processing. For those who don't how to...

Select the Magic Wand tool...click on the sky...go to Select - Inverse. This will isolate the aircraft from the sky and bingo !! no more halo's.

Isolating the aircraft becomes a little more dificult if there are areas of the sky in parts of the picture that don't get isolated from the bulk of the sky. This is an example of that...

          http://www.jetphotos.net/viewphoto.php?id=5954501

See how there is a triangle of sky formed by the tailfin/starboard wing/fuselage ? Selecting the bulk of the sky with the magic wand won't select this part.
In this case I approached the problem differently. I created a background layer (Layer...Duplicate layer...as background copy.)
Perform your processing up to, and including, your final sharpening.
With the magic wand select the sky areas ( in this case the main area and then the triangle area) and delete them. Any horrible haloes and graininess in the sky will disappear leaving the original, clean sky.

Go back to Layer..then flatten image.

Save as a .jpg.......upload to JP.net (always remembering to get the details correct ).......and hopefully you won't get so many overprocessed rejections as I've had lately

Thanks Brian, I'll definitely try that method when processing my next batch of photos.

Oh and by the way, I've encountered the problem with those A4O-XX Gulf Air regs before too

Or rather use curves to get the desired effect. More easy and much less a digital manipulation.

Forget shadow/highlight tool. Too time consuming to get an acceptable result. Like Stefan said, learn to use the curves, it's easy and fast and you'll get the same effect without any halos.
When screning I sometimes look at the histogram and realise that many many people don't use the curves at all...

                Regards

Now....I probably shouldn't say this....but, shall we say, another site, accepted the incorrect A4zero reg !!!!!

                    Ooooooooooops !!!

ps. ..and no, it wasn't the blue site.

I use the Shadow/highlight often, but I never go above 7 in the amount. I have also recently been using curves but have been having contrast problems as a result.

Thanks for taking my comment in the funny manner for which I intended it. I received a "pointless post" warning from the higher powers for it...

Oh dear. Occasionally "Sense of humour level" reaches DEFCON 5 with my bosses at work as well. No harm done, in my job you develop a very thick skin. If you hadn't included the laughing smiley then maybe the bollocking would have been reasonable but...hey ho...there we go !

I tried to turn my (very sincere) apology into a learning exercise for others. Hopefully I succeeded in that.
