  • Canon 28-300mm or 70-200mm

I'm looking to buy a new lens, the two that look good is the:
Canon 28-300 mm f/3.5-5.6L EF IS USM Lens

    or

Canon 70-200 f/2.8 L IS USM EF Lens

I'm really wanting the 28-300mm for its wide range of focal length. Is it a good quality lens for Aviation photography and other things like my freelance photography for newspapers etc.

I already have the Canon 100-400L so I think the 28-300 would be a good add.

Do you need the IS? The Canon 70-200 2.8 series is possibly the best lens Canon makes.

Doesn't having the 100-400 make these lenses pointless. Plus if you really want a new lens...2.8 will be great if you shoot other things. I shoot for papers and magazines, and if you're really freelancing, 2.8 is a must have. I've never seen a serious Canon shooter without the 70-200 to tell you the truth. Get the 70-200 2.8 (non-IS) and get the 1.4 teleconverter. There you'll come close to the 300, with still a lower f stop. If you have questions shoot me an email.

Personally what I would do, remember this is what I would do, if you're not only shooting aviation. Sell the 100-400. Get the 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 + 1.4TC. If you're really freelancing you're going to need something less than 70, and photojournalists shoot in low light without flash. So 2.8 is pretty much a must.

      ^^ 2.8 is a must.

Just remember that the 28-300mm is a Push Pull Zoom lens and the 70-200mm is a Twist Zoom lens.

I'd recommend the lens that keeps the same lenght at all time, that the 70-200mm whereas the 28-300mm extends out like to 100-400mm. But whatever your choice is, I hope you will be happy with your purchase.

        Hi,
70-200 f.2.8 IS is the best lense I ever had... Not regret for the $$$ spent.
A friend of mine has a 28-300mm and even if he's happy with it he says the 70-200 is another category and he's looking to buy one.

        Cheers
        Alex

My 70-200 plus 1.4x made my 100-400 redundant and I ended up trading it in.
          I have a 24-105 F4LIS to compliment this set up as i don't really need the f2.8 24-70.
