  • Canon 30D - underexpoxing/overexposing issue

    Hey guys.

I hope I can find a solution about a "problem" with my 30D's

When I'm shooting at M, Tv, or P mode, and I want to underexpose due to the "harsh/strong" sunlight, and I want to underexpose so I get a nice light on the fuselight, I tried everything - going down to -1 to -2, tried both, but as soon as press the shutterbutton, it goes back to reset

    Example: (-2...-1...0...+1...+2)

Tried that a dozen times, underexposing the photos, but it doesnt seem to stay on the exposure you want it on. (so it doesn't register it) ?

I don't see any changed results.. Is this a problem with 30D's

I asked an 1D series user (spotter-friend) and he couldn't understand it either.

Please help, I tested a same camera (30D backupcamera) no change either.

This could be a registration-problem that it miscaculates ? Meaning it doesn't show it.

I underexpose ALL of my shots in the 350D by -.3. I don't understand what the problem is or what you're doing to make it not underexpose incorrectly. No problems on the 350D.

its the metering mode that you're shooting in, try centreweighted mode, my 30D had to be re-calibrated due to exposure issues. try and shoot in AV mode if you're taking photos during the day. you would only need to underexpose -1/3 in sunny conditions with AV & centreweight metering.

have a look in the guide book for instructions on how to bring up that metering mode.

Just to make sure whites aren't blown out. When shooting jpeg it's much easier to fix an underexposed photo rather and overexposed.

Shooting RAW is the opposite though.

Ive never had this problem on my 30D, ironically, i overexpose all my shots by 1/3 -2/3s, when using centre weighted metering.

Thanks for your help. I might send it in for recalibration. It doesnt seem to stay on the underexposing point, nor do I see any changes on the shots while underexposing or overexposing.

I tried the centerweighted metermode, but it's still the same.

I'll see what the local Canon "dealer" says to this...

My 30D is pretty similer in its inability to underexpose correctly. For some reason when i cut it by half a stop it seems to do the oppersit and blow out the photo. Ive tried going as far as bringing it down to -2 stops and the same thing happens. Never had this with my trusty D60. Not sure if the 30D is still under warenty but i need to get it sorted, its very frustrating.

Have you got the latest firmware? If this is a common problem it may be a bug in the software which Canon may have now corrected. Suggest you check out Canon's website and download the latest software if you have not already done so.

Sounds like a software bug maybe?
Good to see that Canon hasn't got it's exposure sorted out yet then. My 300D underexposed and my 20D loves to blow out whites when i don't dial in 1/3 under in sunny conditions.
The only time i've ever seen my meter move on it's own accord is when i'm shooting in manual (20D though, not 30D), but then again it's supposed to in manual to give you a rough idea of the exposure (if you can ever trust a 20d's metering ).

Havnt really had a play with the spot metering on the 30D yet. Might have a go when the sun decides to show its face

I'm afraid I do have the latest firmware. (1.0.5?) So does my backup 30D camera. And I think it's a problem with 30D's. I dont think it's a coincidence that both happens to have the same issue.

I'm afraid I'm gonna send them both for recalibration, and that it's gonna cost me alot of money. One of them is still under warranty though. But anyway does anyone knows how much does it cost to have it recalibrated.

Before you go sending anything off are you adjusting the right thing as my m8 had the same problem the the 30D im not sure but I think when he was trying to adjust his AV he was adjusting exposure bracketing or something I suggest you have a once over the manual to make sure
