  • How much to charge?

I just received a photo usage request from airliners.net. The message contains the following:

    "Hallo Gianluca,

The company that I work for, (company name deleted), is doing a design for a presentation pitch for the annual report of the South African Civil Aviation Authority. I would like to ask your permission to use your photograph (Photo ID 1199116 on the Airliners.net website) in our design.

Please can you give me an indication of what you would charge us if they decide to use our design? I would really appreciate it if you can let me know as soon as possible?"

    Here's the photo.

As I've hardly ever sold a pic before my question is what an appropriate charge would be. The fact that it seems not 100% clear if they would use my photo on a commercial level or not makes it even harder for me to fix an adequate price.

Any help or comments much appreciated!

Find out the print run if appropriate, and dimensions of the photo of yours they want to use. As it's a presentation pitch I wouldn't go overboard on how much you want to charge. Some would be more than happy to let the company have the photo for free, with just a name check and a copy of any publication sent to them for their personal portfolio. You might find the following sites usefull, although i tend to find they air somewhat on the top end of how much one could get away with asking for a publicised photo.

At the end of the day though the decission is yours as to what you decide to charge. I hope you find these links helpful.
