Or save even longer untill you can buy both the lens and a tc.

There are no set settings to use for exposure. Do what works in conditions present.

Id only consider trading my 100-400 in for the 2.8 + 1.4x. There just isnt any point for anything less in terms for appature. Just because you got the lense made at 5pm on a friday doesn't mean there all sh*te mate

How about using a C polarizer for over-exposed images? They should make a difference apart from slowing down.

Hmm , i dunno, can't say i've really had the need to open up to 2.8 when shooting planes...usually if that's the case it's time to go home.

No they're not all shite...but you can't deny that there have been plently of people who haven't had a good copy, iv'e spoken to a fair few of them.

Had mine for over 6 months, only slight problem, getting used to EC, other than that no complaints from me. Oh yes, the other problem is f***** dust. never had that problem with my Sigma.

The 100-400 is a pretty over-rated lens. Its a good piece for sure, but there are other L lenses that are just alot better, especially consistency wise. 70-200 2.8L is still one of the sharpest longer zooms. I rarely see any professional photogs using the 100-400. Most stick to fixed focal lengths beyond 200mm anyway.

I see a quite a few reports of people who are not happy this the lens ... i for one must have got a Monday morning one rather than a Friday afternoon

                  Perfect in every way .

Just to throw a spanner in the works also .... ive owned pretty much all the "popular" lenses from 2.8's to f4's blah blah blah .. even had 2 f2.8's BUT !

The 100-400 simply gives you the distance plus quality you need for most airshows / flybys etc etc.. you wont get anyway else .. ( without attaching any kind of distance aid not to be confused with marrital aid ) plus ive gone down that route also with converters etc .. but i found it just to messy having to change & take off when required.

                  cheers

For this hobby (which lets face it is why most of us are buying these L lenses) the 100-400 is a clear winner. The distance, coupled with the push pull (giving a quick and easy focal length) are huge plus points. I agree with Tony, for me the 100-400 has posed no problems when used correctly and apart from the slight problems it has in very low light conditions its a fantastic all round lense with minimal limitations.

Oh, i'd forgotten about the dust issue.....100-400 just loves sucking dust onto your sensor..since switching to the twist lens i've had far fewer dust problems.

I though that possibly the push pull thing didnt help my focusing problem I though I may have been getting a little zoom creep causing it to go out of focus. Much prefer my sigma 50-500

I tried a 50-500 and had terrible vignetting at 400mm and up on my D30.

I've never had much trouble with the vignetting. If you're shooting on a foggy day it's an absoulete waste of time with the vignetting. Apart from that it seems ok, although i've had problems with the Bigma which have came back.
