CAnon 100-400 IS Focusing Followup !!!

Hey Thanks again to all for the imput. Much appreciated.
I did make some changes, and the results were much better.
Switched from Al servo to Al focus, still using the 9 point focus, which I think I'll change just to center, and now using the shutter priority mode at F/8.
Still shooting multiple shots, not single. That IS is a trip. The shaking just smooths right out of there.
Any suggestions on the metering? I'm using the Matrix Metering, which covers the whole frame. Maybe I should use the center weighted !!!
    Just keep shootin !!!

Heh, I remember meeting Mr Rowson in MAN 3 years ago when he had no IS...to contribute I think the 100-400 is a nice lens, and I would have one (If I could afford it!) but I too have known a couple of people that have had pretty profound problems with it - mechanical seizure, and the dreaded error 99.

I tried my mate's down at SOU a few times and really liked the results. IS is useful in terms of keepers, it definitely helps consistency versus my non-IS 70-200 F4 (which is itself a great performer). The other thing I'm not keen on with the 100-400 is dust - it pulls an absolute sh*tload into the mirror box.

That being said it remains the 'staple' aviation photography lens - just go to any airshow or popular spotter venue - and people get superb results with it.
