What makes a "screeners choice"?

Good thread. I've loved the idea of Screener's Choice since it was implemented for precisely the reason Helmut does not: the decision is wildly subjective and individual, and I adore that. Especially with the # of screeners operating now, it makes for a very diverse catalogue, with a unique selection of photos due to the varying tastes of each individual on the team.
Other sites have as only equivalent the top viewed photos, which usually contain some gems and then a few hundred in-flight cabin shots
Screeners choice is also a way of rewarding screeners who have just gone through 250+ boring or poor quality photos and tough borderline decisions. Having screened myself, I can say it is so refreshing when you see that one shot that sticks out of hundreds which really makes you appreciate what you're doing, and you do want to reward that guy/gal who snapped it!
Also, if you're simply looking for the most exposure possible, this site is not the #1 contender in that arena, and I'm sure we all know that. But if you want to share your visions of aviation with a bunch of like-minded folks who are just as passionate about it as you are, imo this is the best place on the web.

Calm down people the SC is a very good feature on this sight.
I do have four but the last was two years agowhen there were not as many outstanding shots as there are now.
It is very subjective and that is the way it should be(choice being the operative word).
Some SC are due to hard work, patience and photo skills, whilst others are due to nice lighting, scenery etc at the time, but the end result is the same in that the Screener felt a very good result.
Harder to get these days but occasionally what we should strive for if possible.

Originally posted by BA747-436A Screener's Choice is photo is decided on a few criteria. The first (and most importantly) being: "Has this picture made me sit back in my chair and say 'wow' out loud."?
If the answer to this question is 'yes', then more often than not it will get either a instant Screener's Choice or voted for a Screeners Choice. Other criteria that are considered when making a photo a Screeners Choice are: Is the situation/photo artistic in merit? Does it show something special/out of the norm? Has the photographer captured the best possible image in the current situation? Has he/she gained the best possible outcome from their equipment? If the answer to all, or at least most of the questions is 'yes', then again your likely to find this shot added to our Screener's Choice section.
Think of the Screener's Choice section as our way of showing all the photographers on the site what can be achieved with a good eye for aviation photography.
One thing I have learned is to edit my photos the way I want them for my site, and then go back and redo them for how JP wants them. I would like not to have everything centered, use the rule of thirds makes a photo more sometimes.
Seeing Helmut posted my A2A Sean Tucker shot from the air show.
[photoid=6026769]
Just because it's at an air show doesn't mean everyone gets that view. We were away from the show at 6000 ft, that shot couldn't be taken from Joe blow photographer on the ground.
I might not have the creds that you have, but some times I get the access and that's more important

Most of the personally aimed advice and help has been from JPnet contributors, both screeners and non-screeners. Jid Webb, Gerardo, Andy Marks, "TheBuzu", Chris Kilroy and Ollie Holmes are just a few that spring immediately to mind, apologies to those others that have helped but are not immediately mentioned.
Plus what the aim of jp.net? To be able to learn and get better, so if you want to take a career in photography you can practice on here adn seek advice, not getting Screeners Choice.

Originally posted by HelmutSThanks, I understood that now. But for me as photographer that means there is no way in hell I can actually "work towards" a SC image, since it could be the world's best Jet Photo shot...if it comes out with a screener who only likes prob planes, it still won't make it - and that explains why JP.net is obviously not a site to reliable try and get exposure from.
Which would you prefer 500 hundred hits or no hits? No uploads = no hits= no exposure.
(I havent read the whole thread yet as it goes on a bit so if this has been said then please accept my apologies.)

I think he looks at this site as a way of making money and as he is a "professional" he should be able to get the access but then again its all about the end product. I can pitch up at the airport and take snaps all day long, sides on's are very unlikely to get SC, its all about trying to find new angles etc plus I think being there in the right place and at the right time is a big part of it! Although that sounds good I've never managed one. But its not my aim, my aim is to please myself first and if people like the images then its a bonus!
Skiddy! good luck with the SC mate.
I'm off out to try and be there at the right time in the right place! Knowing my luck I'll have the camera on ISO1600 and 1/30 with the lens cap on!2x Canon 1Dmk3 -- Canon 400mm F2.8 IS L - Canon 100-400mm L IS USM -- Canon EF 70-200mm L IS F2.8 --Canon 300mm F2.8 IS L
