  • Photo Sales Advice...

    I recently had the chance to photograph F9's first Dash 8.

    [photoid=6022123]

    [photoid=6022197]

    I'm sure all of us could use a bit of extra money, me included, so I'm wondering if these photos will sell to airline/aviation magazines. If so, should I contact them, or wait for them to contact me? Then there's the usual "how to ask for money" question as well.

    Thanks!

    I don't know, all I ever see in the "news" sections of the magazines are side-on shots...never seen them use a wide-angle quarter shots like yours.

      I've got a side shot but its kind of backlit, so I didn't upload it.

        ^ Hmmm... that makes things a bit harder I'd say. If it's a new plane usually people want to see how the livery fits, so a profile shot would go down well.

        Editors don't always have to time to search and barter for photos on the likes JP or A.net (obviously it does happen but it's not a failsafe process). However, most publishers don't actually mind unsolicited contributions, if anything they welcome them.

        As for payment, well, here's an example of two possible motives they could deduce:

        a.) I have these images which I thought I'd put forward to you guys
        b.) I'm some dude looking for a quick fifty bucks

        Somehow wording it halfway between the two is tricky, but if they decide to use the shots, I'm sure you could squeeze a free copy or subscription out of them at the very least

        Best of luck

          Also the key to getting newsworth shots in magazines and published is time....as they were shot over 2 weeks ago chances are somebody else has photographed the aircraft and submitted the shots to any aviation magazine with a news section.

          It is still worth a try now, but as I say....time is your enemy when trying to get 'new' stuff published.

            If your not known to the edditor i find it never hurts to make a phonecall to them before emailing them, often they might give you their email adress to send it to.

            After that keep that email adress in your adress book and dont be scared to send them emails with a sample. If you can get your hands on the Beauro of freelance photographers handbook as that will give you an idea of a good price to ask for and often the magasine will be listed in there with their going rate.

            Nwsworthy photos i would contact the magasine as soon as possible about as they are likely to get alot of people aproach them. I have all the major magasines numbers in my phone and im not afraid to phone them just after taking the photo.

              If they are going to do a story, then they may use the shots like that for the story. Sometimes you may have someone who like photos like that and would want to use them.
