  • Missed An Incredible Opportunity Today

I knew it would happen......wake up late and miss the shot of a lifetime. "You snooze You Lose" happened......

I got up late and checked my emails around 11:30am. I discovered a post on another forum that a CO DC10 was planned to make its final flight to the graveyard today....MHV - GWO. GWO is a 4 hours drive and as you know I have been there, photographed all the planes back in January, and am on good terms with the Manager. I looked up COA9970 on the flight trackers and it was not listed. sometimes these things get delayed, etc so I decided to wait until I'd see a time. About 1pm someone else had emailed me the flight plan:
    MHV..EDW..HEC-J6-EED.J8.GUP.J72.TXO..ADM.J52.SQS..GWO/0306 FL290

ETA 20:40Z. Damn!! The plane had not left MHV but it would have taken me longer to get to GWO than it would take the plane to fly from California! What would have happened if I was there? Only that I would have had ramp access and maybe closer access to shoot the very last ever touchdown for this bird, cockpit access, all exclusive photos on a nice sunny summer afternoon with good sunlight. Dont you just hate it when this happens????

I think I am going to try and drive down there tommorrow and get some good shots, but still, had I not slept so late this morning I could have been there for this occasion.

BTW, the plane did arrive at about 5pm. Another old bird bites the dust! Also, Rich down there told me that this plane:

has now been completely broken up and no longer exists. Boneyards are interesting places!

Bruce, you have my condolences thats pretty harsh missing that. The photo the manager sent you is making me wonder, why has a CO DC-10 that has been stored in the USA been given an Irish register??? Unless its going to be cleaned up and sent to Ireland?

It has to do with the history of the plane. The Irish Reg# was that of the Lessor. It was delivered to Phillipine Airlines 10/22/76 as RP-C2003 and then it was sold or leased to another company which then leased it to Leisure in 1994 and leased to CO in 1996, stored MHV 2/00.

This a/c definitely is not going to have a life with anyone else but it may become the aluminim used in your beer can!
