  • The 2007 review topic

Hi there, dear fellow aviation photographers

Now, that the new year has taken over, it's time for a 2007 review. So here are the highlights and lowlights from my personal view as member of the JPnet crew.

    Highs:
    • Overall, the photo quality is improving. The photos itself are getting better, postprocessing is getting better as well. The use of noise reducers and auto-adjustment helping tools is improving.
    • We added new screeners without noticing any change in consistency. Au contraire, the acceptance rate is slowly increasing.
    • Premiere: we have now two ladies in the screening team, two screenerettes so to say. The manners amongst the crew have improved quite significantly
    • We added the 1'000'000th photo to the db.
    • We screened again some stunning shots. Some photogs simply constantly upload top notch photos!!
    • Occasionally, there are some interesting private mails between us and potographers, caused by the screening job.

    Lows
    :
    • We still have those occasional offenders uploading stolen photos, or manipulating the hell out of their photos (changing regs and livery details was just the tip of the iceberg).
    • Some photogs still think, that by appealing with rude comments ("you're stupid", "are you blind?", "noise? probably grain in your eyes" and so on) they will get an appeal accepted. These comments are a great laugh for us, but don't help a bit.
    • We have lost some crew members out of different reasons.

    Wishes for 2008:
    • We are currently updating our screening guideline. This should help eliminate some open questions.
    • We'd love to see more pre-screening amongst some photographers. Dust spots or cropping borders are easy to see and to fix.
    • Hopefully we will get new ideas for new features and hopefully, our programmers will implement them.
    • How about free beer for screeners?

That's it. Feel free to comment, add and so on.

    Cheers
    Gerardo

I was curious if there was a way to prevent the people who make really weird threads in weird languages in the OTF from joining the site. It just makes me mad to see people like that trying to ruin our forums. Maybe have a voice from a few different languages say a simple sentence and then have the person type the sentence in English in a box below when you register to become a member. If you want me to elaborate on that let me know.

          Thanks for the infos Gerardo.
For me 2007 was, apart from the RIAT, a very dissapointing year in terms of aviation photography. I never got 'the' shot I was hoping for which pushed my motivation to a all time low. Anyway, I guess 2008 will be better.
Also I did not upload anything so far partially due to that lack of motivation. As soon as the next bad weather weekend will arrive, which won't take too long I'm afraid, I'll send a bunch of photos so be prepared

By the way, would be nice to see you again sometime in ZRH or INN, if you plan to come this season.

....oh and Chris, the real Bud is not an American 'beer'
          greetings,
          Philip

2007 has a been a year on big changes in my life on a personal level and that is one of the reasons I felt the time was right for a change hence my departure from the screening team of JP earlier this year, looking back I would do it all again as I am happy doing what I now do and after many months of work my efforts are now being rewarded.

The changes that have taken place in my personal life have led to me taking very few pictures this year, in fact I managed only 1800 images this year down from around 8000 in 2005 and similar in 2006, those images that I have taken have been very ordinary and are mostly just straightforward approach shots. I have done a lot more non-avaiation images particularly from the Gunwharf/Dockyard areas down here in Portsmouth but also some railway images.

I think I have uploaded only around 300 images in the last 12 months, but if I can get my passport and my partner's passport sorted out then I hope to head to some Euro airports again, ZRH and AMS are my first choices!

Coming to you live from Denver International Airport's free WiFi, I have to say that 2007 has been a great year to be a part of the jetphotos.net crew. For the most part, the shots I screen are either easy acceptances or borderline shots, I haven't seen a generally bad shot in quite awhile, and I think that means the quality of our database and of all you awesome guys uploading is also improving significantly.

And as for the beer: I like New Belgian Fat Tire Ale

I have a feeling I'm missing something here. Oh well!

This year wasn't all that great for me but it could have been much worse. I got a few good shots but not much upload worthy. My trip to DCA was a learning experience for me as I went to a lot new spots so I learned more than I shot. I've planned my trip up there this year based on my new knowledge so that's good. When I went up there it rained but again I learned a lot so I'm satisfied. I never go the opportunity to get some night shots which was a major disappointment but that will be my new motivation for this year. I've got to get at least one night shot in the DB/

Nah, you are not. In Europe the American Budweiser (or US beer in general) is often said to be crap compared to European beer, which is of course a matter of taste. The 'real' Budweiser originates from the city of Budweis in the Czech Republic and has nothing to do with your 'Bud', hence my statement above. No pun intended btw

Matt, Philipp: drop me a mail, if you ever plan to visit ZRH again. I planned to do INN this month, but it won't happen. Is there snow in INN already?

Thanks a lot for pointing out all the CONS (LOWS) during past year of 2007.
This is really digustting of uploading stolen photos to our database. They should be banned from our forum.

Rude Comments are never welcome and this is not what a real photographer to do. Because we all are taking every beautiful moments through viewfinders so we should keep our temper.

Special Thanks to Gerardo for your guide of ZRH Spotting Locations and your Contribution to the JP with stuning shots such as this shot http://www.jetphotos.net/viewphoto.php?id=5647366

Hope to have a glass of beer with you in ZRH.
To be honest, i am as a newbie in Jp, die trying to get more and more photos day by day. Understanding the hard works of every screeners and apply myself to the rule and gain more experience from rejected photos.
Thanks a lot for everything that making a useful and friendly playground for all aviation enthusiatics.
                      All the best for 2008

OK I get it now. I have some Czech blood by the way.

I say we ban them from the DB. Even better. Seriously that's just disgusting. They should be ashamed.

Let me also add some personal views. First off all I want to thank the whole screening team in public for the time they spent making this site work. We have a healthy amount of screeners who screened more then 40.000 photos this year. That is quite a lot time invested.
I also noticed a good increase in the average quality, we have plenty regular uploaders who are constantly uploading pretty good stuff. But talking about regular uploaders, there are few negative points I want to make.
                          • This site is not for uploading aircraft walkarounds. There is no point in uploading, 3 cockpit shots, each landing gear wheel separately and 6 exterior shots and 6 cabin shots from one plane and one day
                          • do not upload 150+ photos at a time. It is very hard to push through such a load from one uploader, especially if he forgot one dust spot on every single one of them
                          • It is a good idea to pre-screen your own photos. It saves us time and avoids being frustrated by having the better picture being rejected for similar

But there are also plenty of good points of the screening job. First off all we have a great team and the queue dives are always a lot fun on MSN. Secondly it is great to get to know photographers from all over the world. The majority being extremely friendly if you are coming to their airport and need advice.

Good point Stefan though I'd like to say that if you're going to upload 150 photos at once and of course its your right to do so, please make it interesting, not just the stuff from one day at the airport.

Nothing wrong with mass uploads, if the shots are OK. But if we have to reject 1/3 for beeing similar, then this is a clear indication

Any more positive sides for the review? I just mention the positives, as the negatives come automatically
