Since we are on the subject of wide angle lenses, I'd suggest the Tamron 14mm f/2.8. Yeah, it's a prime, and you can't zoom, but so what, if you're looking for something wide, chances are that's where you are going to be using it, and the 2.8 is good for low light situations. It's obviously not as wide a 10mm, but I've found it to be quite nice.

14mm is certainly wide enough on full frame, however on APS-C sized sensors (cropped/1.5/1.6..etc) it isn't, in my opinion anyway.

I use a nikon 12-24 and I still find I want wider. Most reviews rate the Canon as the best out of the three, the nikon second and the sigma 10-20 in third

I have taken a few shots over the weekend, all portrait stuff of the family - very happy with the results. Cant wait to give it a go for aviation. Early morning arrivals at Sydney Kingsford Smith is the plan.

Saw your pics in the que Carl, nice shots, however you will have to shoot manual to get the exposure right for the fuselage, as I have found the lens likes to blow the white out if your not careful with your exposure.

            Hi Brendon,
Thanks for that, hopefully they will get accepted. I thought about shooting in manual but mainly on the 70-300mm shots but I wasnt confident about getting the exposure correct and I just want to get some shots in the database. You just take a reading off the grass from what I understand which gives you the best average. With a bit more experience I will definately go down that path.
I was shooting from 750th - 1000th/sec for the 10-20mm shots and letting the camera sort out the aperture.
            What kit do you use?

            Carl

              30D, can 10-20,can 17-85,sig 50-500 (2x teleconverter)

With the 10mm lens I always use manual. Take a shot, look at the histogram and then go from there. Especially if your shooting the same angle and the same sunlight.

Take it from me, a current 10-20mm owner.

It is THE best purchase you'll make lens wise. It's fantasic! Not just for aviation either. The effects you get with it are great. I just love mine!

Agreed, I am very happy with it. I have taken some of my kids and I love the results.

Brendon, you weren't at Sydney last Sunday morning by any chance were you?

I was down there last Sunday, but the time was wrong as the sun was in my face, will need to be there in the afternoon. Also problem was that I was taking the shot through the fence and couldn't do anything about having the fence wire in the photo. Maybe with cropping it would work.

Umm do what I did, and take 2 milk crates down so you shoot over the fence, or purchase a ladder like all the other guys. Forget trying to shoot through the fence with the 10mm.
