I'm looking at this lens more seriously with each passing day.
Your views & opinion gentlemen, and yes i've used the 70-200L (Rajesh Changela's & Joe Pries') a few times & yes its great but, for the time being i'm looking to spend as little as possible as gotta save-up bigtime for my flying.
It doesn't exactly get rave reviews. I'd still be inclined towards a 70-300mm instead if I was on a limited budget. I think the only reason i'd consider one if I was travelling and I had to watch what weight I was carrying, but I very much doubt i'd use it for aviation.

I don't know where you're pricing comes from, but in the UK and indeed everywhere else i've looked, the 70-300 is cheaper than the 70-200F4L. A quick look on WarehouseExpress in the UK shows the 70-300 IS retailing at 369GBP and the 70-200F4L at 459 GBP and those aren't the cheapest prices by far.
The 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III USM Autofocus Lens would be the alternative..and probably a better one from what I have read previously....I believe the 55-250 has more distortion problems than the 75-300.
You could look at Sigma...http://www.sigmaphoto.com/lenses/len...03&navigator=3
The decision gets down to usage and size/weight for that use.
