I've narrowed the four variations of the lens down to the following two:

      My best option is:
      Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM

      With the second best being:
Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM

I'm pretty sure that I'll go with the first one as it is much cheaper.

      Nice stuff Chris !

But I think if you look HERE
you will find the IS model is more expensive for a reason , the quality is exceptional and carries the latest generation in Image Stabilization. focussing is faster by a mile and the diameter a mere 67mm.

          Thanks guys.

Will, I have decided on the IS version. I can't wait to purchase it.

This is the guy who I talked to about the lens choice and who I went with yesterday. He got 2nd place in the Canon sponsored National Parks Photo Contest and won a boatload of gear. He is one of the most knowledgeable people I know when it comes to photography.

All right ladies, I was looking around B&H's website earlier today and notices that the 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 was on sale for $1,360. I was astonished as this is in my price range. I was considering purchasing it soon but I have this feeling in my gut that I still should go with the 70-200 f/4 which is only $1,025. Here is a breakdown of my thoughts.

              Canon 100-400 f/4.5-5.6
              Pros:
              Extra 200mm
Rather cheap for the amount of telephoto

              Cons:
              More expensive than the 70-200
              Not as weather proof
Some reviews say it's not as sharp
Maximum aperture is a bit large
              Push/Pull design

              Canon 70-200 f/4
              Pros:
Can fill in the gap of 70-100 from my current 28-70
              Is sharper that the 100-400
Has a maximum aperture larger than the 100-400
              Cheaper

              Cons:
              Not as much telephoto

I will be using the lens for birding, aviation, and other wildlife uses.

What are your thoughts about this?

              -Chris

Well I'm going out to the local camera store today to take a look at the two lenses and see what I think about both. I shall tell you what I think about them when I get back.

How reliable is that website? As long as it is not that kind of Brooklyn-Based stores, the prices seem extremely low.

EDIT: I checked them on ResellerRatings and indeed it was too good to be true...

I really hope that it is all that it's cracked up to be. I don't want it to be a $1360 piece of junk.

Unless Dutch forums are full of Canon insiders, you just bought a fire-cracker piece of equipment.
And with the Sigma 28-70mm wide angle to compliment your tele-photo rifle, You've got all the WMD now

Have a blast my friend [well not literally but.....]

Here's hoping that I am satisfied with my new purchase.

I still owe $400 on the lens. My parents loaned me the $$$ for now. I have a summer business, so it shouldn't be too hard.

Well ladies, my bazooka arrived today. All I can say is.............HOLY COW!!!!! This thing is HUGE!!! I'm not sure exactly what I expected but I had no clue it would be this large and heavy. I'm almost scared to use it for the fear of dropping it and having it break.

I'll post some pics from it after I overcome my fear.

Don't worry too much, they're pretty bomb proof. I've dropped my 70-200 a couple of times now and it's still in one piece!...it's the camera you need to be worried about if you drop it!

Thanks James, that's reassuring! I really hope that I get at least 5 years or more out of it. When you spend that much on a camera body and a lens, you are a bit less careless with your gear.
