  • Renting a Canon 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L

This smmer my family has plans on visiting some national parks out west. Yellowstone, Grand tetons, Glacier, and Rocky Mouintain among them. I want to have a decent lens for my SLR on the trip so I'm not stuck with my P&S for thee zoom shots. I was looking around and came across the 100-400L lens. It is only about $150 for three weeks. Is it a good lens to rent os is there a better lens that I can rent? I was looking at the 70-200L lens that I have been saving up for, but I don't think it will be long enough for some of the wildlife shots that I want to get. Has anyone been to any of these national parks before? What is the minimum length to get decent shots? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I went to Yosemite when I was 12, it was awesome for photography. I didn't have the luxury of DSLR's back then but the prints I got from my little point n shoot film thingy were great. Most of the stuff I was taking then though was wide angle landscapes. Don't remember seeing much wildlife though, just the odd squirrel.

You do realize you're going to have to put a deposit for the whole lens amount on your credit card right?

The wildlife photographers I know use 400's at the minimum with 1.4 and 2x tele-converters on them...

Not necessarily . You can go to glassandgear.com and just pay for the rental of the camera/lens. Their rental prices are very good. Good luck and have fun!

Tanner, I was looking around and found a site that if something happens to the lens, you only have to pay 12% of the total cost to replace or repair the lens. Though, I'm sure I'm missing something, so I'll have to be extra careful.

EF 100-400 is one of Canon best lens. It work very well from f.6 to f8 but not smaller f stop.

            Have a nice trip
