My preparations are more or less as follows:- The day before: check the photo equipment. Are the batteries OK? Do I have enough films or - now that I'm digital - do I have the cards and the image tank ready?
- Get informations about arrivals and departures. That way, I make a plan, where I want to be at what time.
- Get something to eat and drink, if necessary.
- Contact friends, which may be there as well.
And then: good luck!!
Cheers
Gerardo

A VHF Air-Band scanner is invaluable, I also like to carry a set of lightweight binoculars to help in identifying specific aircraft from farther out. If I'm not spotting in an openly public area I also like to use a gunstock mount to stabilize my camera. If I'm in a public area I forego the gunstock however as too many misinformed members of the general public (and even a few law enforcement officers) might incorrectly identify it as a weapon.
