  • Canon unveils EOS 7D - 18MP on a DX sensor

This looks like an excellent spotter camera at the price point and way ahead of the laughable D300s Nikon tries to sell to the Nikon users.

Pre-IFA 2009: As anticipated Canon has today announced the EOS 7D digital SLR. It boasts a new 18MP APS-C CMOS sensor, Dual DIGIC 4 processors, ISO range expandable to 12800, continuous shooting at 8 fps and full HD video recording. It also incorporates a new viewfinder with 1.0x magnification and 100% coverage and a 3 inch LCD with 920k dot resolution.

    • 18 MP APS–C CMOS Sensor Designed and manufactured by Canon, the sensor produces an outstanding image and offers fantastic performance at high and low conditions, thanks to a new photodiode and microlens construction.
    • 8 fps image capture Enabled by the Dual “DIGIC 4” processors and improved electrical system, photographers can capture images at 8fps, without the need for additional accessories and in all file types.
    • ISO Range The EOS 7D enables photographers to capture subjects in their natural light. The ISO range (100 – 6,400) is expandable to 12,800.
    • EOS Movie With improved operation, making it easy to switch directly to movie mode, it is now even simpler to shoot Full HD video. Users can set exposure and frame rate – with options for 24 fps to create that cinematic feel.
    • Dual “DIGIC 4” processors By utilising Dual “DIGIC 4” processors, users of the EOS 7D never have to compromise between shooting speed, image quality and ISO performance.
    • Impressive Design Canon has listened to photographer feedback when designing the body, as well as the internal technologies. A magnesium alloy body offers environmental protection – the tough, lightweight construction is designed to defend against moisture, and dust – equivalent to the legendary EOS–1N.

That's a greatly appointed, very reasonably priced piece of equipment. It's a shame other commitments (read: real life) have basically cut out all of the time I used to enjoy taking photos!

As a Nikon user I have to sadly agree that Canon seem to have taken a bit of a lead here.

Mind you #1. How many of those features will you actually use ?

Mind you #2. I can't see Nikon sitting on this one for too long.

Mind you #3. My D80 's still give me a >95% acceptance rate here at JP.

        So There......

Not sure about this, cramming yet more MP into the camera surely can't do much for IQ and noise preformance.

Will be eagerly awating reviews on this.

Kidding right? The D3 and D3X kick Canon's ass in every way possible. Well I guess in the spotting world Canon could have a leg up since they have the 5D MkII and now this...but professional is Nikon still.

Looking at the sample images released, I am wondering if 18MP really starts to show diffraction. At f8.0 it seems like the lens is already not capable of delivering the details the sensor could take.

And then the early reports on the AF do not look good (for a Nikon D300 user):

It became known as diffraction limited aperture with the 50D, which was around f8.7.

However, im hazarding a guess, the less detailed picked up per pixel is offset by the larger amount of pixels, But its going to happen as pixel pitch decreases, the effects of lens diffraction will become more obvious earlier.

Being a Canon user myself, I totally fail to be impressed.

To see a bright spot, hopefully, this might make EOS 5D2 street prices fall a little bit due to people yearning for the newer model.

I was thinking the same thing but from a Cannon user's Perspective.

You obviously havn't heard of the 1dsmk3... Been out for just on two years longer than the d3x has less noise at iso's less than 400 shoots at over twice the fps of the d3x and is over a 1000 dollars US cheaper.
Think u may want to read less propoganda and more solid reviews before sprouting off about the d3x...
D3 is a great camera but it goes nowhere near kicking arse as u speak ..the 1dmk3 again more than holds it's own particularly at lower iso's where the general consensus is again the canon has better iq at the iso's most people use more.
Home baked propoganda is great but maybe in future a more realistic appraisal backed up by some truth might be in order...
